Cutting Edge

Toshiba stands at the cutting edge of some of today’s most exciting technological advancements, including new display technologies that will impact the home entertainment world and beyond.

HD DVD
The future of DVD
Broadcasting is becoming digital. Demand for high-definition TVs is taking off. And consumers increasingly expect greater realism and better image quality in visual entertainment. HD DVD  delivers that and more. It takes the best features of today's DVD- the most successful AV product ever- and adds new capabilities and greatly enhanced functionality. HD DVD is the future, a new standard for next-generation optical systems that delivers brilliant, high-definition performance. The way is open to an exciting new world of entertainment, and HD DVD is ready to take us there. For more information on HD DVD technology, please visit the Toshiba HD DVD web site.

SED TV
Toshiba plans to launch a television based on a new flat-panel display technology called SED, or Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display.  The technology has been under development by Toshiba and Canon since the 1990s. Televisions using this technology are said by developers to produce pictures that are as bright as a conventional cathode ray tube (CRT) pictures, but without the slight time-delay sometimes seen with other flat-panel technologies such as LCDs and plasma display panels (PDP).

Toshiba is eyeing SED as a replacement technology for PDP panels, particularly for use in panels of around 40-inches or larger. The company has already begun laying plans to phase out production of PDP televisions in 2007. It plans to keep LCD panels in small and mid-size sets and use SED for larger sets.

SED is one of several emerging display technologies that, according to their respective backers, do a better job than either LCD or PDP.

World Class CT Scanner
Featuring the most advanced multislice CT technologies available, the Aquilion 64 is built on Toshiba's unique 64-row Quantum detector, volumetric imaging capabilities and advanced software applications. The Aquilion is the world’s only true volumetric 64 CT system with 64 detector channels, 3-D cone beam algorithms and volume reconstruction.

At the heart of the Aquilion 64 is its superior multi-detector design, that produces high-speed, high-resolution imaging with the best low contrast resolution at the lowest dose. The Quantum detector enables the Aquilion CT scanner to acquire 64 simultaneous slices of 0.5 mm with each 400-millisecond gantry revolution. The result is precise isotropic imaging of any region of the body during a breath-hold under ten seconds.

World's Fastest Elevator
The world's fastest elevator is a Toshiba. World's Fastest Elevator opens its doors for business in world's tallest building. The 508m Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan, the elevator runs at a speed of 1,010 meters per minute or 60.6km per hour. Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corp. (TELC) developed the elevator and its special features, and installed two of them in Taipei 101 in December 2004. The elevators have been officially certified as the world's fasted by Guinness World Records and are featured in its 2006 edition. TELC has installed 61 elevators and 50 escalators in Taipei 101 including two elevators that run at 1,010 meters per minute (60.6 kilometers per hour), the world's fastest, and 34 double-deck elevators. The principal new technologies applied in the world's fastest elevator include:
  • The world's first pressure control system, which adjusts the atmospheric pressure inside the elevator by using suction and discharge blowers, preventing those riding inside the car experiencing 'ear popping'.
  • An active control system which reduces vibrations.
  • Streamlined design to reduce the whistling noise produced by an elevator running at a high speed inside a narrow hoist-way.

World’s Smallest Hard Disk Drive
Guinness World Records has certified Toshiba's 0.85-inch Hard Disk Drive as the smallest in the world. Toshiba's 0.85-inch HDD, is the first hard disk drive to deliver multi-gigabyte data storage in a sub-one-inch form factor. The 0.85-inch measurement refers to the diameter of the magnetic disk to which data is recorded. With initial capacities of 2 to 4 gigabytes (GB) the drive delivers enhanced storage to smaller, lighter, more efficient products, such as mobile phones, digital audio players, digital camcorders and portable storage devices.
