Innovations
Toshiba's founder, Hisashige Tanaka, has often been called "the Thomas Edison of Japan." He was a man of great creativity and vision whose achievements paved the way for the modern industrialization of Japan. In addition to building Japan's first working model of a steam locomotive, the company he founded in 1875, Tanaka Engineering Works, manufactured electric bulbs, cables, prototype telephones, industrial machinery and other products, laying the foundation for today's Toshiba.
