Toshiba has nearly a hundred year history of producing Tungsten and Molybdenum products, contributing to society by delivering tungsten light bulbs and also by introducing remarkable inventions such as frosted bulbs and double
coiled filaments.

Today, we offer thin wires and various other products to meet a wide range of customer requirements. From smelting to final shaping, these devices are produced in our own facilities, or those of our group companies, to supply both the Japanese market and the global market.

Three Basic Materials

We have three basic materials for Toshiba tungsten rods and wires. They are doped tungsten, thoriated tungsten, and rhenium-alloyed tungsten. Their many variations meet a broad range of customer uses as shown in the table below.

Toshiba also has three materials for molybdenum wires and rods, pure molybdenum (M10), cobalt and tin alloyed molybdenum (M20) and doped molybdenum (M40). Customer uses are shown in the table below.

 

 

TUNGSTEN WIRE AND RODS
Classification Type Characteristics Applications
Doped Tungsten W31 Standard doped tungsten with excellent non-sagging property. Filaments for bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Heaters for electron tubes.
W41 Tungsten wires with recrystallization point lower than that of W31, which excel in reforming. Vacuum metalizing material and high temperature structural material.
W71 Non-sagging and vibration resistant cobalt included doped tungsten wire. Vibration resistant bulb filaments for automotive lamp.
W91 Excels in non-sagging property and a best fit for high temperature use and also excels in anti-blackening property. Developed especially for for halogen lamp filaments. Filaments for halogen lamps.
Thoriated Tungsten W51 0.7% ThO2-W A cobalt doped tungsten wire with uniform dispersion of thoria particles that enhance strength at an elevated temperature. Vibration resistant bulb filaments for low power small lamps.
W53 1.0% ThO2-W Standard thoriated tungsten wire for electron tubes. Transmitting tubes and magnetrons
W54 1.7% ThO2-W Standard thoriated tungsten wire for electron tubes. Transmitting tubes and magnetrons
W56 2.0% ThO2-W Thoriated tungsten wire for discharging electrodes. TIG welding electrodes and various discharging electrodes.
Rhenium Tungsten H30 3% Re-W Excels in high temperature strength with improved ductility after recrystallization. Heaters for electron tubes, cathode heaters for CRTs and filaments for vibration resisant lamps.
H35 15% Re-W Rhenium alloyed wire with higher electric resistivity and higher strength. Filaments with high electric resistivity for various electron tubes.
H36 26% Re-W Rhenium alloyed wire with much higher electric resistivity and higher strength. Filaments with high electric resistivity for various electron tubes. Probe pins for semiconductor inspection.
H37 3% Re-W Ultra fine wire with sufficient strength. Probe pins for semiconductor inspection.
H38 5% Re-W 5% rhenium doped tungsten alloy wire. Thermocouple (+) lead.
H39 26% Re-W 26% rhenium doped tungsten alloy wire. Thermocouple ( - ) lead.

MOLYBDENUM WIRES AND RODS
Type Characteristics Applications
M10 Pure molybdenum. Anchors, supports, mandrels for single coils and furnace heaters.
M20 Doped molybdenum. It shows little change in mechanical properties after heat treatment and has excellent work range. Grids, mandrels for double coils and antenna mesh for telecommunication satellites.
M40 Doped molybdenum. It has a high recrystallization point, excellent high temperature strength and elongation. Outer leads for discharge lamps, various glass sealing parts and furnace heaters.
