Package with Low Thermal Resistance Contributes to Improved
Energy Efficiency in Brushless Motor Applications |

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 26, 2008
— Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*,
today announced a series of nine monolithic single-chip inverter
driver integrated circuits targeted for use in direct current
motors in energy saving appliances such as air conditioner
fan motors, refrigerator compressor motors, pump motor drivers
and DC brushless motors in washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
Developed by Toshiba Corp., the series of high voltage intelligent
power devices (IPD) are offered in low thermal resistance
DIP26 packages to improve energy efficiency, and feature output
voltages of 250 or 500 volts (V), and output current from
1 to 3 Amps (A).
"Energy saving features of electronic equipment are
becoming increasingly important, and employing DC motors in
electronic equipment can significantly improve the energy
efficiency of electronic equipment, thus saving energy, said
Jeff Lo, business development manager, power semiconductors,
for TAEC. "Toshiba's latest generation inverter drivers
are offered in a new DIP26 package with lower thermal resistance
than conventional inverter drivers, and contribute to the
energy efficiency of brushless DC motor applications."
The series includes one 250V, 1A device, the TPD4121K, and
eight 500V devices with output current ranging from 1A to
3A. The series provides designers with a selection of integrated
functions to meet various application requirements, including
Hall sensor input or six inputs, three phase matrix logic,
power management circuits, level shift drivers, over current
protection, over temperature protection and under voltage
protection. (Please see product specification table below
for part numbers and supported features of each.)
The Toshiba series of high voltage IPD single chip inverters
utilize silicon on insulator (SOI) process to enable use of
the DIP26 package, which has a maximum thickness of 3.8mm,
more than 25 percent thinner than the previous generation
5.2mm (max.) F23 package. Each of the nine devices incorporate
bootstrapping diodes, so no high-side driving power is required
due to bootstrapping. For ease of layout on a printed circuit
board, high voltage power pins and low voltage signal pins
are on opposite sides of the package. The control pins have
a pitch of 2.0mm and the high voltage pins feature wide clearance
of 3.8mm.
