7-12 Grants

Funded projects in grades 7-12 provide students with the opportunity to "do science" in new ways that promise to increase their engagement with the subject matter and improve their learning.

April 2008 - March 2009

A complete list of grants from 2008 is provided below, along with descriptions of several exceptional projects.

Mountain Brook High School (Birmingham, AL)

A grant of $5,000 will support a student-led investigation into environmentally sensitive methods of mosquito control.  Using GIS mapping software, municipal maps and satellite images, students will work with public health officials to monitor mosquito breeding sites and recommend ways to manage the mosquito population more effectively.

Noble Street Charter School (Chicago, IL)

Ninth grade students at the Math & Science Academy will experiment with solar energy by collecting data generated by solar panels on the school’s south wall.  Using mini solar panel kits, students will formulate their own research questions and conduct their own experiments.

Santa Clara Unified School District (Santa Clara, CA)

Three experienced and 12 pre-service math teachers from Santa Clara partnered with Stanford University’s School of Education to teach and evaluate an intensive summer school course in middle school mathematics.  Each day, the teachers presented a new lesson to their students.  After teaching the lesson in their individual classrooms, the teachers met to evaluate how students handled the lesson and what steps might be need to reinforce or improve learning.

Science Park High School (Newark, NJ)

TAF grant funds will enable students at Science Park to design and build working models that simulate the school’s own solar and geothermal energy systems.  Students will compare energy efficiency data from the model units to similar data from the actual units operating in the school building.
