New Highly Reliable, High Quality PCX1100 Cable Modem Includes Technology Enhancements to Provide Connection Rates Up to 40 Percent Faster than Previous Models

IRVINE, Calif., April 18, 2000

Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Network Products Division (TAIS, NPD) today announced that its PCX1100 cable modem has been awarded Cable Television Laboratories, Inc.'s CableLabs® Certified™ status and Level 2 approval from Excite@Home. The cable modem, which meets the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.0 standard and provides support for DOCSIS 1.1, received the recognition for the modem's interoperability, ease of installation and robustness. Along with compliance to industry standards, the new modem delivers improved performance as a result of innovative technology enhancements.

Both the CableLabs certification and Excite@Home Level 2 Approval ensure that Toshiba's PCX1100 cable modem complies with broad industry standards for interoperability, compatibility and performance. The CableLabs certification informs cable operators and consumers that Toshiba's PCX1100 cable modem meets with CableLabs' DOCSIS and cable modem specifications and guarantees its interoperability with qualified cable system headends. Toshiba received CableLabs certification for its high-speed PCX1100 cable modem after successfully completing an extensive series of interoperability tests with CableLabs-qualified headend equipment supplied by several manufacturers.

"Toshiba has been a key part of the effort to advance DOCSIS compliant cable modem equipment," said Dr. Richard R. Green, president and CEO of CableLabs. "It is evident by the certification of their newest cable modem that Toshiba is completely committed to working with CableLabs to deliver cable modems with advanced features at a low cost to consumers worldwide."

The Excite@Home Level 2 approval confirms the successful integration and interoperability of Toshiba's PCX1100 cable modem within the Excite@Home DOCSIS network environment. The Toshiba PCX1100 cable modem successfully passed a range of tests in the areas of throughput, interoperability and reliability when combined with the technology used by Excite@Home. Excite@Home Level 2 Approval allows Toshiba to begin large-scale field deployment among Excite@Home affiliates with the company's DOCSIS cable modem.

"That our modems received both CableLabs certification and Excite@Home Level 2 approval is testament to the product's robustness, ease of installation and interoperability," said Mike Knudsen, vice president and general manager, TAIS, NPD. "Cable operators that choose Toshiba cable modems can be assured that they're deploying a cable modem that meets all the requirements of their DOCSIS cable modem network, as well as a product that will give their subscribers the advanced lightning fast, highly reliable performance they want. In addition, Toshiba is proud to have Excite@Home Level 2 Approval, which will allow us to continue to add Excite@Home cable systems to our customer base."
