TOSHIBA WIRELESS CABLE MODEM GATEWAY
EARNS DOCSIS, WI-FI AND WHQL CERTIFICATIONS
Triple certification of Toshiba's 802.11b-enabled modem gives Toshiba critical green light to successfully market its newest product
IRVINE, Calif. - September 26, 2002
Toshiba America Information Systems, Network Products Division (NPD)
today announced that its PCX5000 DOCSIS Wireless Cable Modem Gateway
is awarded CableLabs® Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification
(DOCSIS) Certified status, Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality
Labs (WHQL) compatibility and Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance's
(WECA) Wi-Fi certification. The PCX5000 represents the only device
in its class to include a cable modem, wireless router and Internet
security technology based on Check Point Software Technologies'
(Nasdaq: CHKP) market-leading VPN-1®/FireWall-1® solution.
The PCX5000 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway
is Toshiba NPD's first home networking solution and will be marketed
through both multiple systems operators (MSO) and retail channels.
It includes both wired and wireless networking features, with four
10/100 ports and an 802.11b wireless interface. The unit offers
Safe@ security software developed by SofaWare, a Check Point company,
and provides Internet security protection to home networking users
based on Check Point's enterprise-class and industry standard Stateful
Inspection technology.
"Toshiba is setting a new bar by bringing
a professional quality firewall to
the home user in a versatile Wi-Fi router appliance," said
security expert and author, Paul E. Proctor, president of Practical
Security, Inc. and author of The Secured Enterprise: Protecting
Your Information Assets. "The Check Point Stateful Inspection
technology is one of the most widely accepted commercial-grade firewall
technologies in the market. Now home users will have the same protection
large enterprises have enjoyed for years."
The PCX5000 will bear three logos on its
packaging to assure Toshiba customers - MSOs, resellers and consumers
- that the unit meets with stringent standards for compatibility
and quality, as established by CableLabs, WECA and Microsoft.
The DOCSIS certification informs Toshiba's
customers that the PCX5000 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway meets with
CableLabs' specifications and guarantees the modem's interoperability
with qualified cable system headends. The WECA certification ensures
that Toshiba's gateway is compatible and interoperable under the
IEEE 802.11b standard. Microsoft's WHQL stamp gives assurance that
the unit is compatible with Microsoft operating systems.
Toshiba NPD says the certifications enable
the electronics manufacturer to move more quickly on a general release
of its newest cable modem product.
"The certification of the PCX5000 Wireless
Cable Modem Gateway by CableLabs, WECA and WHQL means we can now
move forward in bringing this exciting product to market, "said
Fred Berry, vice president, general manager for Toshiba America
Information Systems, Network Products Division. "The PCX5000
will have great impact on the cable broadband market by enabling
MSOs to offer home-networking services to their broadband subscribers.
We believe that this product represents the next generation in home
gateways."
Toshiba plans to make the PCX5000 Wireless
Cable Modem Gateway available through the retail channel and MSOs
in late October 2002.
