IRVINE, Calif., November 9, 1994 -- Toshiba America
Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS, DPD)
today introduced the MK-1924 Series drives which
offer a 540MB capacity and a fast 13ms average seek time in
a 0.5-inch high (12.7mm), 2.5-inch form factor.
"A dramatic increase in the use of portable computers
for graphics and multimedia presentations has driven the
demand for larger storage capacities and enhanced performance
at a substantially reduced price point," said Jeffrey
Greenwald, director of hard disk drive marketing, TAIS,
DPD. The new MK-1924 Series drives meet these requirements
by delivering high capacity and fast performance in a
2.5-inch drive.
According to Greenwald, the MK-1924 Series drives, with
Fast ATA and SCSI-2 interface support, take advantage of
the latest technology and a high level of integration to
provide today's smaller, slimmer sub-notebook and portable
computers with higher capacity, performance and low power
requirements at a reduced cost. "Such innovations as the
predictive read-channel technology of PRML (Partial
Response Maximum Likelihood) and aerial density improvements,
are key developments to these high-performing drives,"
said Greenwald.
The MK-1924 Series drives also feature a 128K cache memory
including write-cache, and use a two-platter design
offering a rapid spin rate of 4200rpm.
The MK-1924 Series drives are available with either Fast
ATA or SCSI-2 interfaces to allow for compatibility with
a wide range of systems. The MK-1924FCV Fast ATA
interface drive supports multiword DMA mode 2 at a
data transfer rate of 16.6MB/sec, and PIO mode 4 with
16.6MB/sec data transfer rate. The MK-1924FBV provides
a SCSI-2 interface and features a 10MB/sec data
transfer rate.
In addition to providing high performance regardless of
interface type, the new MK-1924 Series drives were
developed specifically to meet the ever increasing
demands of the portable and sub-notebook market for
small size, high capacity, low weight and low power
requirements. The new 2.5-inch drives weigh only 5.6
ounces (160 grams) and consume an average of only one
watt from a single 5-volt supply while spinning up to
operational speed in a fast five seconds.
The MK-1924 Series drives are part of a complete product
offering of 2.5-inch disk drives which now allow
Toshiba to offer the most complete range of products
ever. Toshiba's complete line of 2.5-inch drives
spans from 86MB up to 1080MB, including the new
MK-2728 1GB 2.5-inch drive. Recent additions to
Toshiba's 2.5-inch line also include the MK-2526,
MK-2528 and MK-2628 Series drives which offer capacities
of 528MB, 704MB and 810MB respectively, and the MK-1824
slimline drive with a 352MB capacity.
The MK-1924 Series drives weigh only 5.6 ounces and
measure a slim 12.7mm high. These new drives are also
extremely reliable, demonstrating a 300,000 hour MTBF.
The MK-1924 Series drives are available in first quarter
1995 in OEM production quantities at a suggested list
price of only $435.
