IRVINE, Calif., February 28, 1996 -- Toshiba America
Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD)
today announced the industry’s fastest slimline CD-ROM drive.
Toshiba’s new XM-1402B offers leading six-speed performance in
a slimline format measuring only 17mm (H) x 128mm
(W) x 136.4mm (D) and weighing only 380 grams.
The new six-speed XM-1402B internal CD-ROM drive boasts a 900KB/sec
transfer rate and a fast 160ms random seek and 190ms average access.
The drive’s fast performance is attributable to its high rotation
speed, which was accomplished by accelerating the processing speed
of the digital signal processor used in error correction and by
improving the pick-up motor to support higher speed data accessing.
Designed for notebook computers, the drive has a low 3.7W average
power consumption. The drive incorporates a power-saving function
that cuts consumption to 85 milliwatts when the drive is in a
wait state. The drive operates with a 5V power supply.
"This new drive packs tremendous performance into a very small
package," said Jerry Higgins, vice president of CD-ROM marketing,
TAIS DPD. "With this new drive, OEMs can now design fast six-speed
performance plus proven Toshiba CD-ROM reliability into their
notebook computers."
"It is critical when developing a drive for the notebook computer
market that you do not sacrifice reliability," said Higgins. To
that end, Toshiba designed the new XM-1402B drive in a fully-sealed
enclosure to prevent contamination and ensure reliability. Through
these efforts, the drive has a 60,000 hour MTBF.
While engineering the XM-1402B to meet minimal size requirements,
Toshiba developed the drive to support multimedia; the drive fully
meets MPC-3 specifications while supporting Kodak multi-session
Photo CD and CD EXTRA.
Toshiba designed the drive for optimum performance using Toshiba's
proven variable speed playback system and digital servo control.
The variable speed playback system allows the drive to read data
before the disc rotational speed reaches any of 1, 4 or 6 times
standard rotational speeds. The digital servo control, which offers
greater precision in tracking and head positioning, further
contributes to performance and reliability.
The XM-1402B features a drawer-type disk loading system. The drawer
holds an inserted disk firmly and securely, allowing disks to be left
in a PC when it is being carried, or even if the PC is stood on end.
The new XM-1402B is designed for use in notebook computers and
features an ATAPI interface that eases integration.
Toshiba's XM-1402B internal CD-ROM drive is priced from $195 in
OEM quantities and samples are now available.
