Toshiba Announces Industry's Highest Capacity 2.5-Inch Disk Drive; Toshiba's New MK-2720F Boasts 1.35GB Capacity

IRVINE, Calif., April 10, 1995 -- Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS, DPD) today introduced the 1.35GB MK-2720F Series; the world's highest capacity 2.5-inch hard disk drive. This new high capacity drive was designed to provide today's multimedia notebook computers with high capacity, high performance and high reliability.

The new MK-2720F Series 1.35GB drives offer a fast 13ms average seek time and an impressive 100G operating shock. "The new MK-2720F drives meet the increasing demands for multimedia computing," said Scott Smith, vice president of marketing, TAIS, DPD. "Today, more and more notebook computers are being used for multimedia presentations where increased storage capacity is a necessity. In addition, the high capacity of these drives make them perfect for use in docking stations."

The new MK-2720F Series 1.35GB drive is available with a Fast ATA or SCSI-2 interface. The drive features a fast 4200rpm rotational speed and a 128KB write cache buffer which contribute to a peak internal data rate of up to 44.9Mbits/sec. The new drive also offers fast data transfer: the MK-2720FB SCSI-2 1.35GB drive provides data transfer at 10MB/sec synchronous and 6MB/sec asynchronous; the MK-2720FC Fast ATA 1.35GB drive supports data transfer at 16.6MB/sec in PIO mode 4 and DMA mode 2.

The new MK-2720F drives offer several power-saving features that help system manufacturers deliver maximum battery life. Specifically, the new drives average only 1.4 watts of power and feature a fast 5 second spin-up time to optimize battery life.

The MK-2720F Series drives rounds out Toshiba's product offering of 2.5-inch disk drives to give the company the widest breadth of product line. Toshiba's line of 19mm 2.5-inch drives range in capacity from 210MB up to 1.35GB, and its line of 12.7mm slimline drives, including the new 815MB MK-1926F Series, range from 131MB to 815MB in capacity.

The MK-2720F Series drive weighs only 220 grams and measures a slim 19mm high. The drives feature a 300,000 hour MTBF.

The MK-2720F Series 1.35GB drives are priced at $475 in quantities and will be available beginning 2Q 1995.
