Toshiba Introduces Eight-Speed ATAPI CD-ROM Drive;
High Performance and Reliability at a Competitive Price

PC EXPO
BOOTH #3454

NEW YORK, PC EXPO, June 18-20, 1996 -- Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Disk Products Division today formally introduced its eight-speed ATAPI CD-ROM drive during PC EXPO. The internal drive, the XM-5602B, was designed for PC manufacturers to integrate into their PCs and for users who want to upgrade their systems with a faster speed CD-ROM drive. The XM-5602B will be demonstrated during PC EXPO at New York City's Javits Center, Booth #3454.

The drive meets the requirements of today's demanding applications while ensuring ease of integration with its ATAPI interface. The new XM-5602B eight-speed drive features a 1,200KB/sec transfer rate, 120ms random seek and 135ms random access. To optimize data transfer rates, the XM-5602B has a 256KB buffer.

"This new drive follows Toshiba's tradition of offering the industry high performance and high quality drives," said Jerry Higgins, vice president of CD-ROM marketing, TAIS DPD. "Since market demand for the fastest performing CD-ROM drives continues to increase, the XM-5602B will be the drive of choice for OEMs, resellers and distributors." Like all Toshiba CD-ROM drives, the XM-5602B was designed from the ground up for reliability; as a result the drive features a 100,000 hour MTBF.

The new drive is designed with an ATAPI interface and supports mode 3 and DMA multiword mode 1. PIO mode 3 provides a burst mode data transfer rate of 11.1MB per second, while DMA multiword mode 1 supports a burst data transfer rate of 13.3MB per second and reduces the burden on the main CPU.

The XM-5602B fully meets the demands of today's multimedia applications. The drive offers fast eight-speed performance combined with MPC-3 compatibility, multi-session Photo CD support and CD-EXTRA support. The drive can also read CD-DA, CD-ROM XA, CD-I, CD-I Ready and CD-I Bridge disc formats.

The XM-5602B employs Toshiba's variable speed playback system that significantly reduces random access times by allowing the drive to read data upon seek completion before the disk reaches a specific rotational speed of 1, 4 or 8 times standard rotational speeds.

Further contributing to the drive's performance is Toshiba's digital servo control that offers greater precision in tracking and head positioning. The power saving capabilities of the digital servo control combined with the variable playback system contributes to the drive's performance and gives it an average power consumption of only 4.8 watts.

For user convenience, the XM-5602B drive was designed with a tray-loading mechanism. A media-removal prevention function ensures that CDs cannot be ejected during read operations. For integration and set-up flexibility, the drive may be mounted horizontally or vertically. The new XM-5602B internal drive measures only 1.6(h) x 5.7(w) x 7.5(d) inches and weighs only 1.98 pounds.

The XM-5602B ATAPI drive has a suggested list price of $135 and is available now.
