Toshiba’s Storage Device Division (SDD), has announced what is said to be the industry’s first 9.5 mm 5,400 rpm hard disk drive (HDD) family. This family offers high-speed 2.5" HDDs in 20 GB, 30 GB and 40 GB capacities. Featuring a real density at 34.7 Gb per square inch, the drives are said to improve system-level performance by as much as 12 percent when compared with 4,200 rpm drives. The HDDs support fast data transfer rates and seek times. They are suited for portable video recording and editing, large graphics files, and for multi-functional mobile PCs and non-PC applications such as telecommunications, printers, copiers, GPS systems and MP3 players. They also offer fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor technology for PC OEMs looking to reduce ambient drive noise in mobile computing applications. This family’s ATA-5 compliant interface supports high transfer rates of 100 MB/sec, and they can withstand operational shock of up to 200 g and non-operating shock of up to 800 g.
