IRVINE, Calif., April 7, 1997 -- Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Disk Products
Division today introduced its max-16-speed ATAPI CD-ROM drive. The XM-6002B internal
drive offers high performance at a competitive price for PC manufacturers integrating
the drive into their PCs and for users who want to upgrade their systems.
"This competitively priced drive meets the industry's current demand for the
fastest, highest-performance products on the market," said Maciek Brzeski,
director of marketing, CD-ROM, TAIS DPD. "Also, this new drive continues
Toshiba's tradition of offering the industry's most-reliable, high-quality
CD-ROM products."
PC OEMs and end-users wanting to upgrade their lower-speed CD-ROM drives with the
fastest ATAPI interfaced-drive available can choose the XM-6002B. The new 16X
drive speeds through data on a CD-ROM at a 2,400KB/sec. maximum data transfer
rate supported by a 90ms random seek and 100ms random access.
To achieve its industry-leading performance specifications, the drive features
a 256KB buffer and Partial Constant Angular Velocity (PCAV). PCAV combines the
best of Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) to
obtain the highest transfer rates while reading data from anywhere on the disk.
The new drive is designed with an ATAPI interface and supports PIO mode 3 and
DMA mode 1. PIO mode 3 provides a burst mode data transfer rate of 11.1 MB
per second, while DMA multiword mode 1 supports a burst data transfer rate of
13.3MB per second and reduces the burden on the main CPU.
The XM-6002B fully meets the demands of today's multimedia applications.
The drive is MPC-3 compliant and supports both multisession Photo CD and
CD-EXTRA. The drive can also read CD-RW CD-DA, CD-ROM XA, CD-I, CD-I Ready
and CD-I Bridge disc formats. In addition, the new XM-6002B sets another
industry milestone with its ability to read CD-RW (Erasable) media.
Toshiba designed the drive for optimum performance. The XM-6002B employs
Toshiba's proven Active Wide Range playback system and digital servo control.
The Active Wide Range playback system allows the drive to read data at +/- 80
percent of a specific rotational speed -- allowing the drive to access data on
the disc at almost any time. The digital servo control, which offers greater
precision in tracking and head positioning, further contributes to performance
and reliability.
For user convenience, the XM-6002B drive was designed with a tray-loading
mechanism. A media-removal prevention function ensures that CDs cannot be
ejected during read operations. For integration and set-up flexibility, the
drive may be mounted horizontally or vertically. The XM-6002B was designed
based on Toshiba's highly reliable, award-winning 12X CD-ROM drives to ensure
reliability; as a result XM-6002B features a 100,000 hour MTBF.
The new XM-6002B internal drive measures only 1.62(h) x 5.69(w) x 7.41(d) inches and
weighs only 1.98 pounds. The drive's power consumption is a low 0.5 watts standby
and 4.6 watts average. The drive may be used in temperatures ranging from 41-122
degrees Fahrenheit.
The XM-6002B ATAPI drive has a suggested list price of $185 and is available now.
