Toshiba Introduces Slim-line 11-Speed Maximum CD-ROM Drive Targeted to Notebook Computer Manufacturers

IRVINE, Calif., November 18, 1996 -- Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD) today introduced the XM-2402B slim-line CD-ROM drive for notebook computers. The new drive provides 11-speed maximum data transfer and 10-speed average transfer rates.

"The XM-2402B is a follow-on product to our successful XM-1402, 6-speed CD-ROM drive," said Scott Smith, vice president of marketing, TAIS DPD. "With the XM-2402B drive, OEMs gain improved transfer rates in an established 17mm form-factor compatible with existing notebook designs."

The XM-2402B provides a random access time of only 150ms and an average random seek of 130ms. The drive achieves a maximum 11-speed data transfer of 1,650KB/sec. and an average 1,500KB/sec. Additionally, the drive offers a burst transfer rate of 11.1MB/sec. in PIO-3 and supports single- and 13.3 multi-DMA transfer.

The XM-2402B employs Partial Constant Angular Velocity (PCAV) to achieve its fast 11-speed maximum transfer rate. PCAV combines the best of Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Constant Liner Velocity (CLV) to provide the fastest possible data transfer to offer maximum data transfers from any place on the disc. "PCAV allows the drive to read the inner and outer tracks of data on the CD-ROM at different speeds to ensure optimum transfer rates from anywhere on the disc," said Smith.

Toshiba designed the drive for optimum performance. The XM-2402B employs Toshiba's proven Active Wide Range playback system and digital servo control. The Active Wide Range playback system allows the drive to read data at +/- 80% of a specific rotational speed -- allowing the drive to access data on the disc at almost any time. The digital servo control, which offers greater precision in tracking and head positioning, further contributes to performance and reliability.

"It is critical when developing a CD-ROM drive for the notebook computer market that you do not sacrifice reliability," said Smith. To that end, Toshiba designed the new XM-2402B drive in a fully-sealed enclosure to prevent contamination and ensure reliability. Through these efforts, the drive has a 60,000 hour MTBF.

Toshiba also designed the XM-2402B with power-saving functions, resulting in a low 2.3W average power consumption. The drive operates with a 5-volt power supply.

The XM-2402B’s small size makes it an excellent choice for notebook computer manufacturers designing in a high-performance CD-ROM drive. The XM-2402B measures only 17mm (H) x 128mm (W) x 136.4mm (D) and weighs only 13.3 ounces.

The new XM-2402B is designed for use in notebook computers and features an ATAPI interface that eases integration.

Toshiba developed the XM-2402B drive to fully meet a variety of popular multimedia and disc formats. A new feature is the drive’s compatibility with the CD-Erasable, also known as "CD-E" format, which ensures that future CD-E discs can be read on the drive. The drive is also fully compliant with MPC-3 specifications and supports Kodak multi-session Photo-CD, CD-DA, CD-Extra, CD-G , CD-I, CD-I Ready, CD-I Bridge, CD-ROM XA, Photo CD and Video CD.

The XM-2402B features a drawer-type disc loading system. The drawer holds an inserted disc firmly and securely, allowing discs to be left in a PC when it is being carried, or even if the PC is stood on end.

Toshiba's XM-2402B internal CD-ROM drive is priced at $195 in OEM quantities and samples are now available.
