LAS VEGAS, Nev., November 17-21, 1997 " Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD) today introduced two new 2.5-inch hard disk drives, one of which is the inaugural product of a new class of super-slim form factor drives. Toshiba's new slimline MK3205MAV 2.5-inch drive meets current mainstream market demand with its 3.25GB capacity, while the new MK2104MAV slimline 2.5-inch drive delivers a 2.16GB capacity for entry-level notebook computers. Toshiba's new hard disk drives will be on display at COMDEX/Fall, Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, booth # L1214.
New Drives Meet Customer Demands
"Toshiba is bringing to market exactly what our customers have asked for " competitive products at key capacities available in volume," said Amy Lian, director, Hard Disk Drive Business Unit, TAIS DPD. "The mainstream notebook computer user, in both the consumer and commercial markets, is demanding their systems come equipped with increased capacities of 2-3GB for midrange notebooks. As a result, these products will be the hard disk drives of choice for this season's leading notebook computers."
High Areal Density
Toshiba's drives are available with an ATA-3 interface to meet OEM, VAR/VAD and system integrator needs. This new family of 2.5-inch disk drives combines PRML data channels with advanced magneto resistive (AMR) head technology to yield higher areal density allowing up to 1.08GB of storage per platter. This high per-platter storage capacity allows increased overall capacity, while maintaining a slim form-factor. "Because today's software applications are so capacity-hungry, notebook computer consumers in every segment of the market are demanding higher-capacity hard disk drives," added Lian.
Reliability Critical for Portable Computing
Toshiba's two new hard disk drives were designed and engineered to result in high performance for portable computing environments. Developed to meet Toshiba-renowned reliability specifications, the drives offer an industry-high MTTF of 300,000 hours. Also, to combat the consequences of a dropped or shaken notebook computer, the drives all adhere to a high operating shock rating of 100G, and a non-operating shock rating of 350G.
3.25GB MK3205MAV
Specifications
Toshiba's new 3.25GB MK3205MAV was developed to offer notebook manufacturers a product that would meet their mainstream volume demands. The 12.7mm-high MK3205MAV drive offers a 4,200 rpm rotational speed which contributes to a fast 13ms average seek time. The drive provides a peak internal data transfer rate of up to 88.2 Mbit/sec and data transfer rates of 16.6MB/sec in PIO mode 4 and 33.3MB/sec in Ultra DMA mode 2. The 512KB cache contributes to the drive's overall performance specifications. MK3205MAV weighs only 5.29 ounces and measures 0.49"/12.7mm (h) x 2.75" (w) x 3.94" (d).
2.16GB MK2104MAV Specifications
Perfectly suited for integration into leading entry-level notebook computers, the MK2104MAV hard disk drive offers 2.16GB of storage space. The drive's fast internal data transfer rate of 81.1Mb/sec is supported by fast buffer-to-host transfer rates of 16.6Mb/sec in DMA mode 2 and PIO mode 4. With a 128KB buffer, the drive provides a fast average seek time of 13ms and a rotational speed of 4,200rpm. Adhering to the size and weight restrictions dictated by today's notebook computers, the new MK2104MAV weighs only 5.29 ounces and measures 0.49"/12.7 mm (h) x 2.75" (w) x 3.94" (d).
Power Requirements
To meet the low-power demands of today's notebook computers, the two new drives use a 5 volt charge and consume a low 0.3 watts on standby.
Availability
The new MK3205MAV and MK2104MAV 2.5-inch hard disk drives are available now.
