Toshiba Introduces 40X CD-ROM Drive With SCSI Interface
For multi-tasking environments such as workstations and servers, the new XM-6401B provides the right combination of performance, reliability and features
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAS VEGAS, Nev., November 16, 1998-Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC), Disk Products today announced the XM-6401B 40X CD-ROM with SCSI-2 interface, continuing the company's commitment to delivering the right optical product to meet customers' demands. With the introduction of the XM-6401B, Toshiba provides a high-quality, highly reliable optical solution for SCSI users. The drive will be displayed in Toshiba's booth during COMDEX/Fall, November 16-20 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth #L1814.
"There is a definite need for SCSI CD-ROM drives that fulfill the immediate and long-term computing needs for industries that run high-end applications, such as banking and government," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president, marketing, TAEC Disk Products. "Toshiba's XM-6401B 40X SCSI CD-ROM drive provides these companies with the high performance and reliability needed to maximize their technology investment."
Traditional SCSI markets, such as workstation and servers, also require peripherals that will provide stability in the marketplace while meeting their high-end computing demands. The Toshiba XM-6401B meets these demands with Toshiba renowned quality, reliability and innovation.
The XM-6401B features the fastest performance on the market today, by increasing the drive speed over previous generations. To provide the fastest immediate access to data and smooth branching between scenes, the drive has a fast random access time of only 79ms and an average random seek of 85ms. For fast data transfers of software loads from CD-ROM to hard disk drives, the XM-6401B boasts a 6MB/sec. maximum sustained transfer rate and supports burst
interface transfer rates of 20MB/sec. Data transfer is further optimized through the use of Constant Angular Velocity technology and a 256KB cache.
Toshiba designed the XM-6401B with Active Wide Range playback system to deliver optimum performance. The company-developed Active Wide Range playback system enables the drive to read data at +/- 80 percent of a specific rotational speed - allowing the drive to access data almost instantly.
The drive's efficient power consumption average of 10 watts and ability to operate in a range of temperatures from 41 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit further contribute to performance and reliability, and ultimately, to the drive's highly-dependable 100,000 MTBF rate.
For industry compatibility, the XM-6401B is Plug-and-Play SCCI compatible and can read
CD-ROM XA, CD-I, CD-I Ready, CD-I Bridge, Video CD, CD-G, CD-RW, and CD-R disc formats.
Availability
Toshiba is now shipping the XM-6401B through distribution channels.
