TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES HIGH-CAPACITY
4.7GB DVD-RAM DRIVE
New drive
has enhanced performance and expands capabilities for storage backup
and a host of other PC applications.
NEW YORK,
Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC), Storage Device Division
(SDD), today announced its highest-capacity DVD-RAM drive, the 4.7GB
SD-W2002. With 4.7GB of capacity on a single-sided disc and 9.4GB
on a dual-sided disc, Toshiba developed the SD-W2002 for high capacity
storage, including hours of video and graphics-intensive applications.
Businesses and consumers will be able to harness the power of their
electronics by storing hours of digital movies, tens of thousands
of photos and volumes of data on a single disc. With a per-megabyte
price of $.005, DVD-RAM is a very cost-efficient storage solution.
"Toshiba is pleased to deliver a DVD-RAM drive that will increase
the overall value and creative abilities of PC users," said Maciek
Brzeski, vice president, marketing, Toshiba SDD. "Both businesses
and consumers will benefit greatly from a rewriteable drive that
will store more than 400,000 documents or 4,700 full-color digital
photos on a single disc."
The SD-W2002 is designed to be fully compatible with currently
available CD and DVD media. DVD-RAM technology is considered a sound
technology investment and the SD-W2002 provides end-users with a
drive that will be useful to their storage needs now and in the
future.
Toshiba's SD-W2002 employs the latest advances in DVD-RAM technology,
offering an 8MB buffer for peak performance and optimum data transfer
times. The ATAPI-interface SD-W2002 reads and writes 4.7GB media
at a fast 2,704KB/sec and 2.6GB media at 1,350KB/sec. Combined with
fast random seek times for data, taking 120ms for DVD-RAM and DVD-ROM
and a quick 90ms for CD-ROM media, the SD-W2002 allows users to
search, find and read or overwrite data almost instantaneously.
The SD-W2002 is currently shipping in samples and will ship in
volume production in September.
Toshiba has long been a leader in DVD-RAM design and development.
A founding member of the DVD Forum, the governing body for DVD standards,
Toshiba contributes to the technical growth of DVD drives and media.
DVD-RAM is widely considered the leading format for rewriteable
DVD, and consistently viewed as a secure technology investment.
