TOSHIBA INTRODUCES “BEST OF BOTH WORLDS” 20GB HDD FAMILY WITH INDUSTRY-LEADING AREAL DENSITY AND LATEST TECHNOLOGY
High-capacity HDD provides a unique choice between FDB and ball bearing motor technologies and ensures supply to all PC and non-PC customers
IRVINE, Calif,
Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC), Storage Device Division (SDD) today announced its new 20GB per platter family of industry-leading 2.5-inch hard disk drives (HDDs). These new drives will offer the industry’s highest areal density at 35.1 gigabits per square inch and are available with either fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) or ball bearing motor technology to meet the technical performance requirements of both mobile PCs and emerging storage applications.
Toshiba is the industry pioneer in small form factor, high-capacity HDDs essential for the fast-evolving mobile PC market. Toshiba is the only HDD supplier to reach this areal density using ball bearing technology, which is primarily suited for non-PC applications such as printers that do not specify or require the noise reduction characteristics afforded by FDB technology. PC OEMs have increasingly looked to HDDs with FDB motor technology to reduce ambient drive noise in mobile PCs. The combination of a single HDD family with both offerings means Toshiba customers enjoy the most secure supply source the storage industry can offer.
“Our new 20GB per platter family gives our customers a unique advantage of both the technical specifications and sustainable supply that they require from a leading storage partner,” said Amy Lian, director of Toshiba’s HDD business unit. “Certain customers want FDB because of its acoustics. But for many other customers, the low acoustic noise of a Toshiba HDD with a ball bearing motor provides more than adequate performance with consistent supply and a proven technology. It’s the best of both worlds in one family at the key capacities needed to support popular multimedia and data storage applications.”
Technology Prowess in a Small Form Factor
Toshiba’s new HDD family offers capacities in 40GB (MK4018GAS – FDB, MK4018GAP – BB) and 20 GB (MK2018GAS – FDB, MK2018GAP – BB). The HDDs are 9.5mm high with interfaces that are ATA-5 compliant to support high transfer rates of 100 megabytes per second. They can withstand an operational shock of up to 190g and non-operating shock of up to 800g.
At 40GB and 20GB, Toshiba’s new family offers capacities that can accommodate a spectrum of storage needs for portable video recording and editing, large graphics files and other multimedia applications. The family’s high capacity and technical performance capabilities provide the ideal storage for today’s multi-functional mobile PCs, as well as non-PC applications such as telematics, telecommunications, printers, copiers, GPS systems and MP3 players.
Toshiba SDD will begin mass production of the new HDD family in July.
