TOSHIBA UPGRADES PERFORMANCE OF ITS POPULAR DESKTOP COMBINATION CD-RW/DVD-ROM AND MOBILE CD-R/RW DRIVES

Increased speeds provide customers with new storage capabilities for today’s demanding computing applications

IRVINE, Calif,  Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) today announced performance upgrades for its popular desktop combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive as well as its super-slim CD-R/RW drive for mobile computer systems. The enhanced capabilities provide OEM customers and end users with greater functionality for the growing range of computer applications that require solid storage solutions.

The SD-R1202 combination drive, ideally suited for integration in or as an upgrade to desktop PCs, increases PC functionality with the faster speeds for file sharing, CD writing and DVD playback. The new combination drive provides maximum write speeds of 16x for CD-R and 10x for CD-RW, with maximum read speeds of 12x for DVD-ROM and 40x for CD-ROM.

"Because Toshiba’s combination drive allows end users to determine their choice of media, they can experience the benefits of both CD writing and DVD playback technologies," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba SDD. "The drive’s improved performance enables users to access, read and write files faster than ever before."

Toshiba also has upgraded one of its newest slim-line family members, a mobile CD-RW offering. The new SR-C8102 CD-R/RW drive weighs only 197g, measures 12.7mm high and achieves a maximum 16x write speed for CD-R – the highest rate yet achieved in a built-in super-slim CD-R/RW drive. The drive offers a maximum 10x write speed for CD-RW and a maximum 24x read speed for CD-ROM.

"People are using their mobile computers more often for advanced applications, from editing video to recording music – a trend that demands high-speed storage performance," Brzeski said. "This upgraded drive provides the speed users need to keep up with their multimedia applications."

Toshiba will begin shipping the SD-R1202 desktop combination drive in March and the SR-C8102 slim-line CD-R/RW drive in mid-December.
