TOSHIBA INTRODUCES NEW LIGHTWEIGHT, MULTI-FORMAT OPTICAL STORAGE
DRIVES
Mobile Storage Leader Now Has Multi-Read Across The Line;
Featherweight Drives Help OEMs Move To Thinner, Lighter Products
IRVINE, Calif, Toshiba's Storage Device Division
(SDD), Leading in storage products that meet evolving needs, Toshiba’s Storage Device Division (SDD) today
announced two new slim-line optical disk drives, the SD-R2212 combination drive and the SD-C2612 DVD-ROM drive.
Advanced technology allows these slim drives to read multiple DVD formats, including DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM, and
the combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive enables users to create CDs or watch DVD movies. Weighing in at 200 grams, these
featherweight drives help PC manufacturers continue to build thinner, lighter products to meet their customers’ needs.
With full read compatibility for all types of industry standard pre-recorded, recordable and rewritable media, Toshiba’s latest-generation drives can share data of all types, including information recorded on legacy CDs and on standard rewritable/recordable DVD media. That functionality, combined with its light weight, provides PC OEMs with the full range of storage options that can help create differentiation in their products based on customer profiles and needs.
“Our customers have asked us to develop lighter products without compromising functionality, and we’ve done that with our latest slim optical products,” said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba SDD. “Toshiba now offers multi-read across our slim line. As storage needs evolve, Toshiba will continue to lead the way with technologies and products that solve real problems.”
SD-R2212 & SD-C2612
Both drives read DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM media, feature an ATAPI interface and weigh 200 grams. To further ensure compatibility with leading notebook computers, Toshiba’s drives measure 128mm (w) x 12.7mm (h) x 129mm (d).
Extending Toshiba’s industry leading slim-line combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM family, the SD-R2212 is built for peak performance and optimum data transfer times, writing CD-R media at a maximum of 2,400KB/sec and high-speed CD-RW media at maximum of 1,500KB/sec. Combined with fast random seek times for data – taking 130ms for DVD-RAM, 85ms for DVD-ROM and 80ms for CD-ROM media – the SD-R2122 allows users to search, find, read or overwrite data almost instantaneously.
With data transfer rates up to 10,820KB/sec for DVD media, and 3,600KB/sec for CD media, the SD-C2612 drive provides outstanding multimedia performance for the mobile market. Random access times of 130ms for DVD-RAM, 95ms for DVD and 90ms for CD-ROM also contribute to the drive’s superior capabilities.
As part of the company’s commitment to reduce the earth’s environmental load, Toshiba has adopted the lead-free soldering process in its manufacturing efforts. The new SD-R2212 and SD-C2612 represent the first drives to feature lead-free soldered printed circuit boards, with plans to phase out this metal from all ODD products by March 2004.
Toshiba’s SD-R2212 and SD-C2612 slim-line drives will begin shipping to mobile PC manufacturers in early April.
