IRVINE, Calif., November 4, 1996 -- Toshiba America Information Systems,
Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD) today introduced two industry
capacity-leading 2.5-inch disk drives. Toshiba's new MK3003MAN 2.5-inch
drive offers an industry leading 3.08GB capacity and the new MK2103MAV
slimline 2.5-inch drive delivers an industry high 2.16GB capacity.
"The new MK3003MAN and MK2103MAV drives offer the highest capacity levels
in their class," said Chris Norman, director of marketing, hard disk
drives, TAIS DPD. "Toshiba developed these drives to meet the needs of
today's notebook computer manufacturers for the highest possible storage
capacity without sacrificing performance and reliability."
This new family of 2.5-inch disk drives combines PRML data channels with
enhanced MR head technology to yield higher areal density allowing up to
720MB of storage per platter.
Drives' High CapacitiesMeet Demandsof NotebookComputers According to
Norman, notebook computer users continue to demand the functionality and
performance comparable to desktop PCs. "These new drives offer the
performance and capacity levels that make them top performers for not
only text and data applications, but also multimedia applications that
combine text and data with audio and full-motion video," said Norman.
The two new drives were developed with leading-edge performance and
reliability. Featuring an ATA-3 interface, the MK3003MAN and MK2103MAV
provide a fast 13ms average seek time and data transfer rates of
16.6MB/sec. in PIO mode 4 and DMA mode 2. The drives offer an
industry-high MTTF of 300,000 hours.
The 3.08GB MK3003MAN, the industry's highest-capacity 2.5-inch disk
drive, is the premier drive for notebook computer manufacturers. This
drive features a fast 4,852rpm rotational speed that provides an internal
data rate of up to 76.4Mbits/sec. The MK3003MAN measures .75 (h) x 2.76
(w) x 3.94 (d) inches and weighs 7.7 ounces.
Toshiba's new MK2103MAV was developed to offer notebook manufacturers the
highest capacity available in a slimline (12.7mm) profile, coupled with
maximum performance and reliability. The 12.7mm-high MK2103MAV drive
offers a fast 4,200rpm rotational speed which contributes to a peak
internal data rate of up to 69.8Mbits/sec. The new slimline drive
conforms to the demanding size, weight and power restrictions dictated by
today's notebook computers. The new MK2103MAV weighs only 5.3 ounces and
measures .5 (h) x 2.76 (w) x 3.94 (d) inches.
Sample units of the MK3003MAN will be available in December 1996 with
volume production beginning in January 1997. Sample pricing for the
MK3003MAN starts at $795.Samples of the MK2103MAV are available now with
volume production scheduled for later this month. Sample pricing for the
MK2103MAV begins at $595.
