IRVINE, Calif., October 16, 1995 -- The world's highest
capacity 2.5-inch slimline hard disk drive was introduced today
by Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products
Division (TAIS DPD). The drive, the MK-1301MAV, offers a
capacity of 1.35GB and a fast 13ms average seek time in a small
0.5-inch high (12.7mm), 2.5-inch form factor.
"While computer notebooks become smaller and thinner, user's
demands for high performance, high-capacity storage increases,
creating a need for a very slim hard disk drive that offers higher
capacity while delivering maximum performance," said Scott Smith,
vice president of marketing, TAIS DPD. "The MK-1301MAV drive,
which was designed with high density heads, meets these demands
by offering the highest capacity and the highest performance of
any slimline 2.5-inch drive."
Toshiba designed the MK-1301MAV drive with PRML (Partial Response
Maximum Likelihood) predictive read-channel technology and proven
high density head and media technology to ensure high-capacity
without sacrificing reliability. Through these technologies,
computer users can achieve maximum storage capacities plus fast
access.
The MK-1301MAV features design and engineering attributes that
result in high performance for portable computing environments.
The MK-1301MAV drive offers a fast 4200rpm rotational speed and a
128KB write cache buffer which contributes to a peak internal data
rate of up to 55.6Mbits/sec.
The MK-1301MAV drive provides users with the highest performance
specifications available in the industry and is available with a
Fast ATA interface to meet OEM, VAR/VAD and system integrator
needs. The MK-1301MAV drive provides fast data transfer rates of
16.6MB/sec in PIO mode 4 and DMA mode 2.
The new MK-1301MAV drive provides leading performance while still
meeting the demanding size, weight and power requirements of
notebook and portable computers. The new 2.5-inch drive weighs
only 5.3 ounces and consumes an average of only 0.9 watts (idle)
from a single 5-volt supply.
The MK-1301MAV drive's small form factor helps ensure computer
notebook integration. The drive measures a slim 0.5-inches high,
2.76-inches wide and 3.94-inches deep. The MK-1301MAV drive is
also extremely reliable, demonstrating a 300,000 hour MTBF.
The MK-1301MAV drive is available now in quantities starting
at $475.
The MK-1301MAV drive rounds out Toshiba's product offering of
2.5-inch disk drives to give the company the widest breadth of
product line. Toshiba's complete line of 2.5-inch drives range
from 540MB up to 2.16GB, including the new MK-2101MAN 2.16GB high
capacity drive.
