Toshiba
Brings Multimedia into the next Millennium with DVD-ROM
As one of the lead
developers of the ground-breaking technology known as DVD, Toshiba continues to be at the
forefront of the market with DVD computer products. DVD heightens the computing,
interactive and multimedia experiences with leading-edge playback capabilities such as
MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital AC-3 audio. These characteristics, combined with a capacity
large enough to hold the contents of six CD-ROMs, makes DVD the storage and playback
medium of the future.
Toshiba presenes a combination CD-RW drive with DVD-ROM readability, the
SD-R1202. Built to give the best performance for data, multimedia and storage
environments, the drive combines key technologies CD-RW and DVD-ROM including lasers and
LSIs from both as well as a combination pickup head.
Toshiba's DVD-ROM products are built with the same reliability and performance
specifications inherent in the company's line of CD-ROM drives. To meet the needs of all
its customers, Toshiba offers DVD-ROM drives in form factors for integration into both
portable and desktop computers.
In 1997, Toshiba expanded its family of DVD products to include the option of DVD
rewriteability with DVD-RAM, the only rewriteable DVD format approved by the DVD Forum.
Toshiba's DVD-RAM drives record data onto a DVD-RAM disc - either 2.6GB on a single-sided
disc or 5.2GB on a double-sided disc. The result is a very low storage cost per megabyte
of less than one cent ($0.01). Toshiba's DVD-RAM drive maintains strict reliability
standards, making DVD-RAM perfect for video record-and-playback, security, back-up and
data storage. For more information about DVD technology, please look at our "DVD Technology Overview" or description of our "DVD Formats."
