Toshiba presenes a combination CD-RW drive with DVD-ROM readability, the SD-R1202. Built to give the best performance for data, multimedia and storage environments, the drive combines key technologies CD-RW and DVD-ROM including lasers and LSIs from both as well as a combination pickup head.

In 1997, Toshiba expanded its family of DVD products to include the option of DVD rewriteability with DVD-RAM, the only rewriteable DVD format approved by the DVD Forum. Toshiba's DVD-RAM drives record data onto a DVD-RAM disc - either 2.6GB on a single-sided disc or 5.2GB on a double-sided disc. The result is a very low storage cost per megabyte of less than one cent ($0.01). Toshiba's DVD-RAM drive maintains strict reliability standards, making DVD-RAM perfect for video record-and-playback, security, back-up and data storage.
