This light & thin laptop is a powerhouse. Put a Solid State 80 GB HD, and 8GB of RAM in it, and WOW- Awesome... at least so far...

Killer Machine

This little powerhouse of a PC is quite a machine, Fast, lightweight, put a SS Hard drive with an upgrade to 8MB of ram... and look out fast as lightening.

Light weight, great features, fast processing, lots of software included. Only thing I would add is a lighted keyboard.

The ease of use is amazing. Plus, the lightness is awesome. I work at a middle school and the tech teacher helped me load a few programs and as she said "I am really impressed by this laptop'! For her to say that, I knew I had made a great selection. Also, I have Multiple Sclerosis and having such a light laptop and great compact keyboard helps me fight off cramping and fatigue in my hands.

Great Laptop

With a few hours of use a day, the extended battery lasts 3-4 days! The processor is speedy enough for use with mathematica.

Great little laptop!

Awesome laptop! I've been looking for something w/ a lot of bang for buck and this is it! I'm a student and this laptop is perfect for my needs. Extremely light (only 3.2 lbs) which is great since I have to haul around such heavy books; long lasting battery (I've gone up to 10 hrs on one charge) which I love b/c I don't have to always be near an outlet. It's fast but I'm not a gamer so I can't speak to that experience. The speakers are decent, I've read other reviews where people have said they're outright horrible but I think they're okay. For what the laptop costs, I wasn't expecting high-fidelity sound...My only gripe is that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard which for me would make it absolutely perfect.

hats off!!!

Best laptop I've had

This is one of the most powerful little 13 inch lap you can get. Supporting an Intel core i3 and windows 7 you can experience the fastest lap you can get. Originally I was looking for an i7 but when i talked to one of my computer genius friends that works for intel he said that unless your doing some major number crunching you will not see any difference in performance other than an i7 will eat your battery faster and speaking of battery life I can usually get about 8 or 9 good hours on it if I run it using Toshiba's nifty little Eco mode. One of the best feature Toshiba has done is integrate a DVD player and burner, something that most other 13 in laps don't have unless you pay over $1000 for a vaio or a macbook of the same size. The keys on the keyboard is very nice they space apart properly and only thing I wish they did was make them back lit but that's really only important if you work in the dark. It does not have a number pad on the right like I am used to but that is expected. Another great feature is the USB 3.0 port on the right side, I have a 500 gb external hard drive that supports USB 3.0 and transferred 27 gb of music in about a half hour compared to which it took a hour on my Friend's laptop. I highly recommend this to any student about to enter college or any person that might need to do work on the go it is an excellent laptop

I feel the small size and light weight makes it competitive to the IPad which I did not want to get because I prefer a keyboard over a screen where you constantly would have to rub off smudges and fingerprints (which I don't mind doing on my IPhone because it has a small surface). I LOVE its long battery is at least twice as long as my previous laptop.

I love this computer!!

I love this laptop. It boots very quickly and has the power I need to run the Bible software I use. It is small and light weight. It is great for streaming movies and is very fast on my wireless connection. Using Skype with built in camera is a bonus that I hadn't expected. My wife and share this computer and we may need to buy another one soon. Highly recommnend.

Laptop Review

Love the size. Love how light it is. A bit disappointed in the battery life. Up to 9 hours and actually getting 5 is a bit misleading. 5 hours is good but the 9 hours was a real draw. If someone is talking about 9 hours in a sleep mode then that is of concern.

Super portable

POSTED BY: Nolij , Provo, UT
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

If you need to carry a laptop around all day, this is the laptop to have. I hardly notice the weight. It doesn't take up much room either. The metal frame sure makes it feel sturdy. The webcam is great for Skype. I get 8 hours out of the battery if the screen is on the dimmest setting and I'm not multitasking (I've had it go over 10 hours just downloading files with the screen turned off). I get about 4 1/2 hours on max brightness with multitasking. The computer stays cool and hardly uses the fan if you're not doing CPU intensive tasks (internet, word processing and stuff). My only complaint is that it gets hot (hot, not just warm) around the fan when it's running full speed playing Star Craft 2 or other intensive programs. All in all, its a great portable laptop that can still perform.

Great but rather slow

POSTED BY: monmon435 , Michigan
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I like this laptop. The battery life is excellent and it's easy to operate. However, the speed seems rather slow. Comparing it to a 5 year old Dell Inspiron, it is MUCH slower then it while I expected it to be faster. The Portege has a quick boot up though and when still on and shut, it takes no more then 10 seconds to access webpages. My favorite thing about it though is the size. Being a college student, it's very easy to throw in a backpack and haul around the campus. The bottom doesn't get very hot either. Although it seems like it's flimsy and would break easily, it's actually quite durable.

Lightweight, slow to load

Excellent hardware, light weight, long battery life. Extremely portable. Very slow to load OS and Internet explorer. Leave it on all the time to minimize load time.

Ezxcellent, with a few flaws

POSTED BY: Mikey , Chicago, IL
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Great machine. Fast, big hard drive, nice display, seems to be well made. Others have criticized the keyboard. I find it responsive, with a nice feel. Goes to sleep fast; wakes up quickly. Battery life is by far the longest I've ever encountered, so much that I can leave home for a day without the power cord and not worry. The built-in camera is cool for video-chatting via Skype. Packs a lot of punch in an impressively lightweight package. OK -- the speakers are awful, tinny, a real flaw because I travel a lot and like to listen to my home radio stations. The volume control is mouse-controlled; I'd preferred a real button. I've enhanced it with a large monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse (both inexpensive), and still it was a good value. Easy to set up. Everything worked out of the box. All in all, I'm delighted with my purchase.

Good traveler

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I've been using the R835-P50X Laptop for a bit over a month now since my old laptop bit the dust. I'm on the road quite a bit and a good performance/weight ratio is important. The Portege fills the bill quite nicely. The only complaint is that the flat keys on the keyboard and their spacing makes it a little harder to type and takes some getting used to. I also got a docking bay but I'm somewhat disappointed in it since the laptop doesn't have a docking plug, it uses the USB port to connect to the docking port and thus is unable to recharge the battery. Other than that, it's a good little machine for a road warrior.

Very nice Laptop

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This laptop meet all the requirements my wife was looking for, small and very light weight. It functions as intended without the bulky weight that other laptops possess. The only con to this laptop is the speed of start up. It seems to take a little longer than other laptops. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who requires a laptop for school based on the weight alone. Add the office upgrade and your all set.

First Laptop Owned With Decent Battery Life

POSTED BY: cratchet50 , Georgetown, SC
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Really good battery life. Hard drive makes noises like it is resetting whenever the unit is jostled or moved when the laptop is on; not very comforting. All is still working, but worried how long it will be prior to not functioning correctly.

Conection issues

POSTED BY: DK , Andover, MN
Overall rating: 3 out of 5 3 out of 5

I love the size and weight. The battery life is amazing, but it has some real issues in connecting to a wireless network. Sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn’t. It might connect for a while and then it drops the connection. The only other thing is that the space bar is a little narrow and I often miss it as I type.
