The 5 Stars I have given is based on the reviews that point out the number of "glitches" in the software and hard ware being resolved. IF all the negatives are resolved, the laptop should be truly worthy of "5 Stars." I own a Toshiba P205-S6337 that came originally with Vista Home Edition and a very slooooow 4700 RPM HDD. (It must have been on the store shelf for some time since it was on "special.") First order of modifying was replacing the HDD with a 7200 RPM Western Digital HDD (drop sensor) version. Next. I installed a FULL retail version of Vista 64-BIT Professional. My laptop has not had any problems since the modifications 8 years ago.. When you have a new computer with ALL the factory "add ons" installed, you will have software issues. IF computer manufacturers would offer to install just the operating system without all the 'add ons' so that the consumer could install, OR purchase separately, the other software that they need or want to use most if not all the software "conflicts" would be resolved. I challenge Toshiba to be the first in the industry to set this "new standard." I know Toshiba computers are great. Toshiba's hardware side of the equation is very good. Most computer issues are "software" related.

Great Laptop

Love the sound on this laptop, clear and loud, if set to 75% can listen to it in other rooms clearly. The touch pad could use some work, but that ok I use a gaming mouse. Its great for gaming, my last 3 laptop have been gaming ones, and feel this one is most likely in the top of them. Have had 1 HP, 2 Asus, the gaming laptop from Asus I thought the sound was great, till I got this Toshiba and it put that one to shame. Was not happy with the Windows 8.1 till I started to use it. Its not to bad. As far as battery life goes, its good. Its plugged in most of the time when at home, and when I travel have a power inverter, so I don't worry about that.

Top Dog

This X70-AST3GX1 replaces my 7 year old G35-AV600 Qosmio which still runs fine but can’t be upgraded passed Windows XP do to hardware limits of this early produced unit. This unit has to be classified as the top dog of laptops available today. If you want performance this is it. The 17” screen is clear, bright, and sharp with very good resolution. The keyboard has a very nice touch and includes a numeric pad. I love the back lighting which is great in low light conditions in the evening. The touch pad works well but gets in the way sometimes when typing. I prefer a trackball and added one immediately. This unit does generate heat which can be felt as the fan blows it out the right side of the unit. Normally the you can’t hear the fan but fire up all 4 cores of the CPU with a high compute application and you can hear the fan rev up and a lot of hot air pours out the right side vent. The DVD drive uses a slide out tray which looks very flimsy and could be broken very easily. I used it several times and it worked fine but the last time it sounded like an old prop air plane taking off but it still worked. The unit arrived just as advertised in the specs but there were couple surprises. My old Qosmio has 2 HDD bays as does this unit. I planned to replace the 1 TB HDD with a Samsung EVO SSD which I already have, clone the Window 8.1 to it and make it the primary drive as it has some very nice software to boost performance. I chatted with Toshiba and ask if I could move the 256GB SDD to the second drive bay and was told I could. Even though it’s a mSATA I expected the 256GB SSD to be in drive bay 1 which it is not. The 1 TB HDD is in drive bay 1 and the 256GB SSD is mounted internally not accessible to the user. I also can’t find a mounting bracket to mount my Samsung SSD in bay 2. This unit comes with 32GB of ram but there are only 2 ram slots accessible to the user which contain 8GB ram modules. The other 16GB is mounted somewhere internally and not accessible to the user. Having 32GB of ram is great but there is a drawback of having this much memory. With all my new and upgraded software installed it takes up about 56GB on the SSD but Windows 8.1 creates 2 system files pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys which eat up another 66GB of space on the SSD. 38GB for pagefile.sys used to swap memory to disk and 28GB for hiberfil.sys used by Windows 8 to save memory on shutdown and startup to get the very fast startup and shutdowns seen in Windows 8. It is possible to reduce the size of these files but it’s not recommended. Even with Toshiba putting the SSD and memory internal which I don’t like they probable had to do it to get everything to fit and the flimsy DVD I have to rate his unit 5 stars it’s simply one screaming machine.

A feature laden powerhouse in a superbly elegant package. Luxurious overkill for all but us power users. And with a great warranty and very competent Tech Supt. Excellent human factors considerations.

Replacement for Qosmio G35

I bought this Qosmio X70 because I've had a G35-AV600 for 8 years, and it's still going strong. If something works, I stick with it, and will replace with the same brand when the time comes. So far, the X70 appears to be a strong replacement, although I miss some of the AV features included on my G35. Overall, I'm very happy with Toshiba, but not as happy with the changes Microsoft made between Windows XP and Windows 8.1. I'm sure most people think 8.1 is better, but I'm not one of them.

I love my new laptop. This is my 4th purchase of a TOSHIBA laptop for home use and they have been the best. My new laptop is not as heavy as my last QOSMIO but then again maybe technology has gotten better. By the way I still have my first TOSHIBA laptop I purchased 6 years ago and it works great.

This is a great unit, really light, really fast, really powerful. The only issue I have with it... it is the resolution, it is too high for a 17' screen, and if I lower it, everything looks really bad. Once you get used to that resolution or increase the font size... it is better. You can have 2 external monitors connected to it without an external USB docking station.... GREAT! The battery last over 3 hours.

This computer is very fast! The solid state hard drive makes a big difference. I have had the machine for a month--and no real complaints yet.

GREAT laptop, the speed left me in awe, the SSD makes 90% of the difference. Would have preferred a bit of control over the software found in the laptop, but otherwise its an excellent machine no questions asked!

Excellent well rounded laptop

For me 7.6lbs versus the performance this laptop offers and the great display size makes it awesome! In addition, full featured and near top of the line hardware makes me capable of almost anything on the road. Though I can't stray far from AC power even with a spare battery I still feel that is the easiest limitation to overcome given the tremendous power of this machine!!

the best laptop ever

this is the best laptop i have ever seen, but only one primary thing most be changed is the screen it most be changed from TFT LCD to IPS LCD, and some secondary things can get better like a stronger battery and a higher screen resolution maybe like QHD maybe

Awesome Laptop

Great laptop. I did adjust it so the menus work like Windows 7 as Windows 8.1 without a touch screen is uber annoying. But once adjusted it is awesome. My previous laptop was also a Qosmio and I have been nothing but happy. Only upgraded because Microsoft will no longer be supporting XP. Glad I made the leap. This package is worth it. A la carte the cost is much higher for the same benefits.

The processor is weaker than I hoped. I do a lot of video editing and 3d graphics, so I need the raw power. The 32 gb ram is nice, but I've only been able to use 8.2 gb since the processor hits it's max and can't allocate more ram. The 256gb SSD for the OS and all programs installed is a very nice feature, so rendering out a videos write speed goes from 10 mb/s for a 5600 rpm HDD to well over 130 mb/s (depends on the program rendering) on the SSD. The blu-ray burner is oddly slow only able to write about 8 mb/s even to the SSD, and blu-rays are 25gb or 50gb, so it takes quite some time. Battery life on High Performance is about an hour, nothing new for me which is why I gave it average rating. A real nice feature I didn't know about was the laptop is capable of 3d viewing, and hook it up through the hdmi to a non-3d tv and still get the 3d effect. Price wise, not very great since the processor makes the 32 gb of ram useless and 16 gb would easily suffice. Although the graphics card is pretty sweet, NVIDIA GDDR5 at 3gb is one of the better ones out there (for laptops).

Excellent product

Expensive, but a fine product and certainly for everything inside, a great value. There is no touch screen, which surprised me, because I thought ALL W8.1 systems would have a touch screen. My assumption was incorrect. This PC takes a little time getting used to. If you want a PC you can move about freely and easily, it is a bit large and heavy for that sort of application. I do not move this PC around everywhere as handily as my spouse moves around the ultrabook! The pwr plug has a tendency to slip out easily, so you have to be careful and get used to that. Otherwise, this PC with 32GB RAM is very fast and convenient to use. Works great with the docking device accessory from Toshiba. I was able to find drivers for 8.1 for all my devices, including an old HP Scanjet, from HP. Carrying case accessory works but is a little small, making it a little difficult to fit in stuff you need, so one might need a size bigger.

Clever if used wisely

I found the new Qosmio to be a fun and enjoyable tool for my work and gaming interests. I do advise that owners will want to elevate the chassis above where the existing rubber feet have it, so that it get's better access to draw air for the cooling fan underneath. (I suggest either bigger stick-on feet or a cooling pad) Excellent system for tech savvy pros.

This laptop is ideal for running 3d graphics programs such as Autocad and for Photoshop CS5. The Windows 8.1 operating system is silly and obviously written for 15 year olds who like to play games and surf the net all day.
