Secret quadcore cpu

This quad core performs better than some i7 and even i5. I have incredible 11 second boot up time and blazing fast performance. I may have a faulty chip or something but I am glad I bought it. Im a former owner of i7 2.5 ghz quad 6gb cache and this cpu rocks on windows 8

Good Value

The only thing that disappointed me was the audio quality. I use external speakers sometimes to amplify the laptop audio, but when I do the sound is really low quality. It sounds thin and cheap. When I use the laptop speakers, it sounds exactly the same but the volume is much lower. I've noticed that watching movies and using a headset the Toshiba has the same low quality audio. My older Toshiba has a much better sound both internally and externally, and I assumed my new one would too. I still like the laptop, but I don't use it for music listening.

So far a very good laptop

This is good laptop, I though a lot before to get windows 8 but after all the apps work good and you can always use Toshiba desktop which looks similar to classic layout. I have not tried to update to windows 8.1 yet. For the price is a good buy. Minor scratch, but after all is good so far. I have an older Satellite that's why I choose this brand again, the old laptop still works for a college family member so that's why I need another one. Buy it you won't go wrong.

Needs Some Upgrades

We bought this as an extra laptop for my elementary school age children to do homework on. It definitely needs a better touchpad auto scrolling feature. Our Sony VAIO has a much more user friendly touchpad. Also the screen intermittantly dims and brightens and we don't know the cause. It may be due to low battery charge, or the computer getting updates, or a loose connection between the power cord and the laptop. Whatever the cause, it is annoying and distracting. It is also taking a while for us to get used to the Windows 8 operating system but that is not a Toshiba problem. Overall, it is nice to have another laptop in the house, I just don't know if it should be a Toshiba

Bad experiences

I originally acquired a discontinued model with a 750 GB HDD. The battery failed the first time I charged it. The retailer was very helpful, though, and I was able to take the unit on a business trip a few days later. That's when the unit failed a second time. This time the HDD failed badly - taking out almost a week's work in configuring the system, loading software, and transferring data. It was useless on the trip. However, the company that sold me the unit is national. A west coast store very helpfully replaced my broken unit with a newer one... unfortunately with only 500 GB of HDD. However, without the destroyed data and software, it did me no good. Other than annoyances with Win 8.1, I was bothered only by the mouse cursor pad (badly located and too proximity sensitive for me), and was happy to see a software driver upgrade that recognized when I attached a USB mouse. That software has failed miserably. I cannot use the unit without the USB mouse at this time. After less than a minute, the software locks up the mouse cursor and ignores the cursor control pad. Two units, three batteries. No luck yet and a reduced HDD capacity. Hence the overall rating well below the features/performance/etc. - the very things that got me to buy the unit in the first place.
