best notebook compromise for the price

POSTED BY: Dagz3 , Gilroy, CA

I would be brief. I have only one disgust with the current E300series. Unlike M645 and A665, it does not come standard with nVidia discrete GPU and Harman Kardon. I guess, Toshiba cut corners for a future model or options of this current line; or maybe to make it affordable. At any rate, I am digusted because the E300 series should have been perfect indeed. All thing else, you have lots of options like the usual installation of ssd, extra ram, extra software, and so on. Enginering wise, the unit is excellent; it s the best compromise of best available design, materials, and hardware, that does not break your bank account. The present enclosure design is engineered wisely with aluminum and resin so as not to be so heavy and cumbersome like the "die cast" not aluminum as claimed, apple macbook pro and hp envy. I love this notebook, 90%. It would have been 98% if Toshiba completed the unit with nVdia and Harman Kardon. Why 98% and not 100%? Its because, I have yet to see a notebook that is made with titanium. My Taurus guns are built with titanium. I long to see a notebook made with titanium. Challenge to you Toshiba.

Excellent laptop!

I bought this laptop about a month ago now and so far have no complaints! It is a very impressive system with tons of available memory, a great display, and a flashy backlit keyboard. I would highly recommend this laptop - it is comfortable and relatively quiet to type on, it has a large touchpad, allows for multitasking in several different programs at once, a long battery life, and is even lightweight for travel. Love it!

Class act in every regard

From the backlit keyboard to the i5 processor, I have found the E-305 answers my every need in a laptop. The quick start up and shut down of this laptop means my wife gets the desktop when ever she wants it as I prefer to use the laptop. I love the keyboard with separation between the keys and find this is the first laptop, particularly in this size, that I can type as fast as on a desktop keyboard. It is light enough for lugging through airports yet solid to handle. I like being able to turn off the mouse pad, too, as I find my thumbs tend to brush these and create unintended actions. The upgrade to metal from shiny plastic is another great improvement over the E-205. I love it, I love it, I love it!

Excellent Features & Value

This is one of the best Laptops you can get for the money, certainly one of the best I've had. The combination of features, performance, portability and functionality is awesome. From a business purpose perspective the only drawback I find is that it does not have a Numerick Keypad. But all of the above supersedes this little glitch. Go for it!

Excellent value package, particularly as it included the cool Push2TV box. Fun to see pictures and movies from my computer on my 37" LCD TV

Very good laptop.

Could be lighter! How could you have omitted to include the combination keys (Fn-Alt+Digit) for special characters? This is the most frustrating part, as I write in several different languages. I have enjoyed this feature with my previous laptops. Had I noticed this problem in the store, I probably would have chosen a different lap top. I have had to buy a separate, external keyboard to remedy the problem.

Great Laptop

I highly recommend this great little lapotop. The feel of the keyboard is the best I've used in a laptop. The backlighted keyboard is great, too. The battery seems to last forever. It starts up and shuts down really fast, even after I installed all my needed software. I did remove Norton for my preferred anti-virus software. I was so impressed by this laptop, that I purchased another Toshiba (All-in-One) for desktop use. My previous laptop and desktops were Sony Vaio's, but I'm sold on my new Toshibas!

E305 Surprises Me!

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I got the E305 to replace a several year old laptop. It is was faster on bootup(Win7 and Hybrid drive), hybernate, and in every other way I can think of. Only 1 complaint no easy access to Memory, or Hardrive for the repair and replacement of these. Should be standard by now!

Very Nice!

Good, but has problems

Overall this is a good laptop but it does have some problems. The first problem I noticed was the left shift key only works some of the time. I am actually sending it in to get that problem hopefully fixed. You have to hit the key just right to get it to work. The second problem I have noticed is the multitouch clickpad does not do everything that I want it to do. I was hoping that it would act more like a Mac in regards to the three or even four finger flick or press. I have found some additional software (Scribe) that adds to what I can do but I would still like to flick to be able to go to the top of a webpage. Other than that it has been a great laptop. I like that the function keys were "replaced" with more useful functions. Ex. Instead of F12 it is Mute... I also found that the WiMax feature is really nice to stream movies on my tv without having to mess with cables. (Just don't look at your computer screen because there is a little delay with the sound) If you are looking for a quick durable laptop (except for the left shift key) with a bunch of extras this may be the computer for you. Think of it like a Mac Book Pro with more features for less money.

Performs great, I5 is fast and I love the hybrid drive and built in wireless. Battery is super compared to the old laptop I replaced. only complaint is no easy upgrade compartment for memory and hard drive. These should be standard on all computers!!!!

Touch pad way too sensitive when in tap mode. Right and left click buttons should be totally separate like other laptops. I did not think this would make much of a difference but it is annoying when you can not differentiate the right and left side when they are both part of the overall touch pad.

So far, this laptop has exceeded my expectations. Battery life as advertised, multitasks well, light weight. The backlit keyboard is a great idea! Easy on the eyes. This laptop delivers as promised.

i don't like the software for making photo dvd's. the toshiba lap top that i had prior to this one had great software for making dvds. i could add music and it was easy to use. the software on this computer is horrible and extremely basic. it will force me to purchase software to make my photo cd's and had i realized that the necessary software was not on this lap top, i would have purchased a different computer. i will say that i love the lit up keyboard though.

This laptop was purchased to replace an Acer we lost from a lightning strike. I would grant this computer a good overall rating for the average home/small business user. The software package is over-bearing with trials and gimmicks. It took some time to delete most software that would not be used/did not want to "upgrade" from trial versions, including Microsoft Office. The hardware is impressive and for those of us without cable, DSL or satelite, the Intel WIDI compatibility with our analog TV makes it worthwhile to watch NETFLIX when our PBS station doesn't air our once-a-week show we enjoy as a family. The only downfall of this computer that I discovered so far is the mousepad and buttons. The buttons are difficult to engage and the mousepad often is activated by my thumbs which rest below the spacebar to a place I wish it not to go. Otherwise, I do like the setup, the feel of the keys when depressed, the screen image, the DVD/Blueray drive, the speed and the available ports.

Don't count on WiDi

The laptop locks up on occasion when surfing, but I think it is due to the WiDi in the laptop. The WiDi crashes a lot.

Too many annoying problems

The touch pad is way too sensitive when in tap mode. Just brushing your hand across it can cause it to click. I miss the separate right and left buttons on my old Satellite. The DVD player won't eject unless you hit the button just right, so most of the time I have to pull up My Computer and tell it to eject from there. The battery was great at first, but now that I've used if for a few months, I'm finding it's no better than the average laptop...and getting worse. My last Toshiba Satellite was greats, but I am regretting buying this laptop!
