Nice system, Win8 is definitely different than WinXP. Trying to get used to it. No Microsoft opinion yet.

Solid Laptop

I started looking for a new laptop when my trusted 10-inch netbook was no longer able to hold a charge and I was afraid of losing all of my data. I compared many units across all brands, sizes and features. I settled on the 15.6" laptops because I found myself needing a numeric keyboard because of all the stats I compile for various fantasy sports, and the larger screen also helps during live drafts. When comparing Toshiba laptops to Dell, Lenovo, HP and several others, I noticed that, for the most part, they all had faster processors and larger hard drives for comparable money. Plus, you can expand the RAM memory from 4 gb to 16 gb (I have already added an additional 4 gb). Most of the others only allowed for an increase to 8 gb total. One of the only downsides to this model (and almost every other Windows laptop) is the incredibly annoying Windows 8 operating system. I found myself reading through the owner's manual just to figure out how to navigate simple tasks, such as disabling the mousepad (I prefer using a wireless mouse) or bringing up the Control Panel. Whoever designed this OS must be some higher-thinking supernerd who has no concept of how regular people navigate their computers. Once I learned a few basic shortcuts, the laptop became much more user-friendly. Overall, for the money, this is a great laptop. Packed with more features than almost every competitor in it's class, and easy on the eyes, I would recommend this Satellite laptop to my friends in a heartbeat.

I have been extremely satisfied with my new Toshiba laptop!! I shopped around and nothing even came close to the value of this computer!! Way to go Toshiba! In fact, even our company IT guy, who is very picky, was impressed with the features for the price!!

Only thing I don't like is how Windows 8 wants you to use their apps and you have to be in your Microsoft account so they know all you do. So I just use the desktop and create my own pages.

I have one complaint and it is the poor quality of audio. The sound on this laptop is horrible.

Good but not perfect

I like my Laptop but the Sound is the horriblest thing ever I heart in my live. I can't understand this. Every cheap cellphone has a better sound. But the other Parts from the Laptop working absolutly great.

This laptop works great, however, it makes a pretty loud clicking noise when running. I'm not sure if something's wrong or if that's just the way it is but it's been like that for a month and works fine so all I can do is wait to see if it crashes. Very frustrating. If it wasn't for the clicking then I would give this laptop 5 stars all around and definitely recommend it.

All it needs are decent speakers!

I bought this laptop to replace a 7-1/2 yr old Toshiba that had worked amazingly well until just recently. This is our third Toshiba laptop and I assumed it would be similar to the others. It is in most ways but the speakers are just awful. Very tinny, almost impossible to understand words or music. I went back to the store where I purchased it and after much discussion wound up getting headphones as a work-around but I'm not happy. Next time I will definitely listen to the sound before purchasing.

Great laptop for the price

I shopped carefully before I bought this laptop. $400 plus tax was my limit. Another requirement was that it have one of the third-generation Intel i-series processors, and this one does with the third-gen i3. I'd have preferred an i5, but with a $400 price cap, that's asking a lot. I also would have preferred more than 4 GB of RAM, but I was glad it was at least DDR3 RAM running at 1333 MHz. And I was able to upgrade the RAM to 8 GB for only $35 at Best Buy. Graphics are great for a laptop, thanks to the i3 GPUs. They REALLY ramp up the graphics handling. And although the built-in LCD screen is not 1080p-capable, there is an integrated HDMI-out port that sends up to a 1080p video signal. Moreover, sound is also sent out through the HDMI port, making it easy to connect to an A/V system. Also there are two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, which I liked. Usually lower-priced laptops will provide maybe one USB 3.0 port, if that many. And unlike Desktop PCs, there is no way to add USB 3.0 ports to a laptop. Built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet jack - those are a given these days an are found on this laptop. Toshiba is a solid brand, with good support for their laptops. As most people out there, I HATE Windows 8, and I promptly ripped Windows 8 (kicking and screaming; Microsoft makes it deliberately hard to remove the OS) off the laptop after giving it a firsthand try for a day and finding it to be even worse than I was lead to believe by all the negative reviews of Windows 8. Of course, this requires a copy of Windows 7 (I would not recommend going back further than 7, although Vista would probably be okay). Really Windows 8 being preinstalled is my only real issue with this laptop, but I was able to rectify that thanks to the fact that Toshiba offers drivers for this brand new laptop going all the way back to at least Windows XP. That is the part of reverting to an earlier version of Windows from 8 that is potentially the most problematic; not all manufacturers provide such good support for OSs before Windows 8, but Toshiba does. Had it been otherwise, I would have had to return the otherwise solid laptop. Great laptop, and a great deal money-wise. It's just too bad Windows 8 has to dampen the experience. But if you are computer-savvy enough (and you must be or know someone who is or be willing to pay a computer professional), you can upgrade it to an earlier version of Windows. Yeah, I know that sounds weird. But trust me: it's true.

Decent notebook for the price.

Toshiba has consistently impressed me with their laptops. I'm a real estate broker and I replace my laptop every 2-3 years to stay current and fast. So far(I've had this new laptop about 1-2 months) this one seems to be doing just what I need it to do in terms of speed and capability!

Great Computer Bad Software

When I needed to replace my laptop, I bought an updated version of my Satellite which served me well for over a decade. It's a little bit big for my computer bag, but I don't carry it around much. Plus the screen is awesome. Seriously dislike Windows 8! Hate having to log onto my own home computer, really? Biggest pain is getting back to email when you've opened a window from within an email. Oh, and shutting the computer completely off shouldn't be that difficult. Recommend Windows 8 for Dummies - took most of the pain out of learning Windows 8.

Awesome Laptop

A very nice laptop, and the new Windows 8 is not hard to learn on it. I love the spaced out keys and the large screen. It has three USB outlets which is nice. The only thing I wish it has was a scroll line on the mouse pad. To scroll up and down you have to click on the side bars and move them up or down or over. Other than that, it is a great laptop and a very good one for school is you need the basic functions.

What good is a good laptop with a bad OS

POSTED BY: Max , Dorchester, MA

The computer itself is fine for the money. The Windows 8 os that came with it is absolute garbage. Did they even test this with real people. It is confusing, overly complex and completely unnecessary. Toshiba should refuse to use it. Honestly, determining the quality of the computer itself is near impossible with a garbage OS like Windows 8.

Returned it

I owned two previous Toshiba Satellite laptops, and they were both great for the money. After such great experiences with the previous ones, I felt I could buy another Toshiba with great confidence. But apparently the 3rd time is not the charm. This one functioned like a clunker. It would randomly lose connection with my network. It was very, very slow, despite being brand new. And the speakers were horrible, even by lap top standards. There was no mid-range or low end, just treble. I assume I just got a bad one. But after being a long time loyal Toshiba customer, I had no choice but to return it and get a different brand.

Good computer, very bad audio

POSTED BY: V , Sacramento, CA
Overall rating: 1 out of 5 1 out of 5

I like the computer, but the speakers are so bad I'll probably return it. The sound is garbled, as if it's through a tin can, and is almost inaudible. The computer has good features, like the numeric keypad and beautiful video, and I'd like to listen to music and play movies, but you can't understand the dialog without headphones, so you can't watch or listen with others. I even downloaded every audio and driver update available from Toshiba and Realtek, no improvement. For my use, this ruined an otherwise great computer. I'm surprised, because my last computer was a Toshiba Satellite, with great sound and features, and I loved it and kept it for years.

Bad experience

Overall rating: 1 out of 5 1 out of 5

My laptop stopped working 4 days after I bought it. It had power problems the whole 4 days. If I was running on battery, it would just shut off after a while like the battery was dead, but when I plugged it in, the battery was at 50%. One day it just turned off, and wouldn't turn on again.

I have this laptop for 3 months and I've had so many problems with it. First none of the usb ports worked whenever I plugged something in it didn't work, then the computer didn't let me connect to a wireless network, then every time I tried to access the internal hard drive on my computer the computer crashed.
