Powerful Gaming Rig with a Moderate Price Tag

The decision over which version of an item to buy comes often down to a balance of price, product and delivery. The best product might be too expensive and take a long time to arrive. Look to lower the price and you start compromising on the configuration. Versions immediately available might not met requirements for configuration and price. For me, the Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7170 hit the sweet spot for all three. I was looking for a portable computer with enough horsepower to smoothly run graphics intensive games. A middle to high end gaming rig available for immediate shipment from a dependable retailer with a price tag within my budget. The performance of the A7170 has exceeded my expectations. Boot up is the fastest that I experience in years. The Intel i7 CPU and 16 gigs of RAM is fast enough to run Windows 8.1, my productivity software, games and play videos. Dual GPUs allow for lower power consumption and heat generation using the Intel Graphics chipset while running less demanding programs, switching over to the Nvidia 770M GPU to keep frame rates high in Civilization V, Skyrim and Warcraft even on the highest graphics settings in those games. Video playback is smooth and without interruption. The 17” widescreen is pleasing to view, giving movies and games an epic feeling. I haven’t travelled with this laptop so I can’t speak to the portability but it does fit into the large computer backpack that I routinely use. Mostly, I use the laptop while sitting with my spouse on the couch. The weight and size of the laptop are reasonably comfortable sitting on the lap. The placement of the air intake vents on the bottom makes a cooling pad a requirement (I recommend the Cooler Master U3 with three adjustable fans). Placement of the Nvidia GPU on the right side of the laptop keeps the hottest part of the computer away from the left hand, a major plus for right-hand mouse and keyboard gamers. I find the placement of the right side USB ports and headset jacks too far forward to make them usable as I am always hitting the plugs. That is how I damaged the audio jacks on my previous Toshiba laptop and rendered inoperable more than one gaming headset with a USB plug. I am delighted with my purchase and user experience with the Toshiba A7170. It is a powerful machine that meets all of my requirements.

This is one the best preforming laptops I have ever used. We have a custom built desk top at work and this laptop out performs even that. The only real compliant is the cooling system is lacking the unit does run on the warm side, I compensated for this short coming by customizing my deck with an auxiliary cooling fan with helps.

This laptop is a great value for the money. I'm not much of a gamer, but I do a lot photo & video editing. This laptop has Photo Shop already installed on it. The battery life is not great, but it does get better with repeated use and full charging. The case is attractive and well built. It is very solid!

powerful beast

Is By far the best laptop I've had. Is speedy, powerful and way less expensive than other gaming laptops I was willing to get. I'm an architect so I'm always using 3D design programs and it's a "must have" a good laptop to resist that amount of work. Maybe I would add a better battery, Asus is way better in this field. And also the fan vent is oddly located in the right side so your hand gets hot when using a mouse, besides the ac conector is in the right side. That feels linda dumb as it Will get hot if you let the cable on that side. Except for those failures, is perfect. Mine came with a blue pixel Wich doesnt seem to work Well, i might use the warranty when i get the chance. Is a great laptop, Nice screen and crisp resolution.By the way, people who passes By and looks At the laptop love the red finishes and the back lit keyboard Wich also lits in red.

This was the perfect laptop for my gaming, but after playing for a bit The fan kicked on and my mouse hand started to get warm then hot. The fan is located on the right hand side near center. Also the power cord is located on the right side. other than that its a great machine.

Gorgeous design!

The notebook is very good indeed, but Windows is really falling short with constant crashes. On the plus is an excellent computer with excellent hardware.

I really liked how easy it was to get going and convert data from my old computer. However, after having it for 2 weeks, it said there was a problem with the hard disk, and I should back up immediately. I have everything backed up. Otherwise, it seems to run fine, but I still get the hard disk error message a couple of times a day. This morning I got a mess saying it had detected a vibration on the hard disk. Also. a USB external drive I use for it's history backup had a problem.

Needs one correction

overall handles streaming of video rather well, gaming runs a little on the warm side (to be expected though). Very quiet when gaming, or streaming. As I use it mostly for schooling all day, I never experience any problems. However I find one thing could be corrected or improved upon. The 4 pronged ac adapter/ charger that plugs into the laptop itself, could be better connection, such as is in a single male/female connector. Sometimes a slight movement on my lap desk and it pops out of socket. My only issue with it Toshiba, but I call it as I see it.
