I was a bit hesitant to start with a company I've never used, but Toshiba has made it easy to use their product, and I've enjoyed learning about and setting up my laptop. I recommend this product to anyone who is a bit tech nervous, but who is looking for a quality computer at a reasonable price.

Unexpectedly Awesome

I have never owned a Toshiba laptop. My favorite brand was Lenovo, and so I was skeptical when I was handed a brand new Satellite. Oh, how I would be so wrong. This laptop isn't top of the line, by any means. But it's certainly not a bottom-line laptop either! It came with Windows 8.1, and it runs everything I throw at it decently. It boots in about 20 seconds, much faster than a new VAIO booting Windows 7! After booting and logging in, everything I do is handled well. Visual Studio, Winamp, Team Fortress 2, Surgeon Simulator 2013, Euro Truck Simulator, everything just works. It comes with a fair bit of Toshiba software installed, but it's rather unintrusive compared to some other manufacturers. It has a USB 3.0 port (which I will never take full advantage of, sadly.), and an HDMI out, coupled with a VGA out. It also has a DVD burner, and dedicated microphone input. The keyboard is comfortable, but the font is a bit too Comic Sans-esque. Additionally, sometimes keys take a bit too much force to register. For the price, though, this is an excellent laptop. If you're looking for a good laptop on a budget, get this one. It has everything you need, and little of what you don't.

Great value

This laptop is just what I needed. Windows XP was no longer supported so I had to move on. Had a Toshiba before and now I have a new one. Can't really figure out Windows 8 but Toshiba has a way around it. So far I really like this laptop.

Excellent choice for home

Love my Toshiba, price was the main factor, and getting updated features. Windows 8 a little quirky at first after Vista, but great now. Computer has great technology, loaded with lots of cool apps.

My new Toshiba laptop is very easy to operate and has loads of new features. I have only had it a short time so Im still unfolding all the "updated programs." I'm sure as time goes by I'll become more acquainted with it. .

I like this new laptop but miss some of the features from my old Toshiba. I'm bumbling my way through it but still do not know how to access several areas.

THIS IS MY THIRD TOSHIBA AND THEY ARE ALL STILL RUNNING GREAT. GOT MY FIRST ONE IN 2002 A LITTLE SLOW NOW BUT LOOK HOW FAR COMPUTERS HAVE COME SINCE THEN. RUNNING AN L555 NOW AND JUST BOUGHT THE C55-A5180 FOR BACKUP WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY GREAT COMPUTERS!

GREAT battery life!

POSTED BY: blaisek , Placerville, CA
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

The machine itself seems to perform VERY well and a six (6) plus hour battery life was a surprise on the good side. {Windows 8.1 seems to balk at times and is not consistent in operation. Hopefully that will change with Service Pack1 issuance tomorrow.}

Replacement for xp laptop

Needed a replacement for an older Toshiba laptop and found this at a good price. I had heard all the difficulties with getting used to Windows 8 and it was different but not hard. Runs great and easy to use/

Bought a lower end laptop since I am not planning on being a heavy user. Struggle with the Windows 8 but otherwise pleased with the cost value of this unit.

My second Toshiba and at a great price. Has everything I need in a laptop. Took a week or so to get the hang of Windows 8, but now can do most automatically.

A very good value

POSTED BY: Atari , Costa Rica
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I bought this laptop as a replacement for my other Toshiba Satellite Laptop with a larger screen. That one I had for six months and the hard drive failed and I lost all of my professional photos that I had acquired since 1994. I bought that laptop when my HP laptop mother board died. But I was able to get all the info off of the old hard drive. I usually do back up, but I didn't think that the hard drive in the first Toshiba I bought would fail in 6 months! Lesson learned. Even though I paid twice as much for the other Toshiba, I bet this cheap one lasts longer. And yes, I have backed up my files now. I had a much better experience with this Toshiba because it had Window 8.1 instead of just Window 8. Windows 8 was a disaster.

One negative is that there was no documentation with the laptop. Fo a former Mac user it was rather difficult using Windows 8.1 But the hardware is just fine.

How should I put this

I wanted a laptop that wasn't touchscreen and a good value. This fit the bill, but the navigation took a little to get used to. The screen bounces from one to another which can be annoying, but I am enjoying the speed of the machine and the large screen

Not What Was Expected

As a device it's what it is. The problem lies with the driver and the programs thereafter. Having to relearn how to use a computer after decades of using the windows up through XP is a great downer and a waste of time.

Great average laptop ...

I bought this toshiba laptop after having owned a Lenovo ... as a starter laptop this would be a great product. It's not snappy fast, and the keyboard is definitely not the best (the keys feel cheap and i am already finding loose keys after only a month!) Toshiba could do. Also, the 4gb RAM should be doubled, especially in 2014. I saved about $20 over a the next choice, a Lenovo. Toshiba, either get out of the computer market or use better components! I shouldn't have a loose #1 key after a month of LIGHT USE.

poor touch pad design

touch pad and buttons are totally blended in with the frame. It is impossible to see them in low light. i've had to install a "regular" mouse.

Reasonable laptop

It's fine, although there are better Toshiba models, but there are some things that bother me. Maybe it's actually more to do with the new Windows 8, I don't know, but the camera is quite difficult to use. It's like my finger wipes across the touchpad & suddenly the window I had open is gone... I've found that especially frustrating, & I don't even know how it happens. I'll open a window, then it gets closed accidentally easily. And the zoom feature is very annoying; I had to spend about 15 minutes of research online to figure out how to disable the zoom feature (it kept on zooming in & out, because when I'm using the touchpad, my index finger is swiping & my thumb is clicking... when the thumb just barely touches the touchpad, it registers as a zoom in or out command, & I was spending far too much time resetting to 100%.) I also looked up online how to disable scrolling with the touchpad (versus the scroll bar), because it was frequently going up & down pages without my intention. And, to be really picky here, when my hand is on the touchpad, my hand rests on the edge of the laptop, & it's a quite sharp angle... I feel a smooth curve would be better. So, in conclusion, there are the software issues, where windows are closed somehow when using the camera, by simply swiping on the touchpad (again, I'm unsure if that's a problem with Window 8 or the laptop), & then there was the zooming & scrolling on the touchpad which I disabled (after spending some time researching on message boards online.)

"crackly" sound

POSTED BY: leopard , worc ma
Overall rating: 2 out of 5 2 out of 5

I had a previous Toshiba and I could adjust sound quality and it was clear, this one the sound has no bass, no where to adjust, that I can find... and constantly makes "crackle" noises... very annoying. the quality is much lower than my previous satellite

Disappointment

POSTED BY: queenbjan , South Carolina
Overall rating: 2 out of 5 2 out of 5

The problem is probably more with Windows 8 than it is with Toshiba. I seem to have a pretty useless computer that won't let me install my old MS Office software. Haven't tried much else yet. I don't want to pay to use the Cloud and all new software.

Broke already

hate windows 8

I have had a computer since 1980's and have never been as frustrated with using one as much as I have with windows 8 - I hate the program with a passion and feel it should be replaced free to everyone who has it. Windows 7 worked- Windows 8 is a big mistake that I had no choice in when I brought this new computer.
