My New Laptop

POSTED BY: jemms
Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I am new to your brand. Previously I had purchased only Dell, then HP...my boys both have Asus. I am very pleased with this computer...except for the battery life. My laptop seems to only last about 2-3 hours max until I have to plug it in. Also, it is fast, but could be a bit faster. I love the keyboard, the size and brightness of the screen is ideal. Given everything, I would definitely buy this laptop again. I only use it in one place, so I just plug it in when necessary.

I am a customer moving from Windows Vista to Windows 8.1 and a lap top not a desktop. Also I am not the most savvy computer user. I can tell you I am enjoying doing my word processing programs with this laptop. I thought I would have trouble getting used to the keyboard, and yes, I had to practice with it, but it wasn't all that bad an experience. My friend and I both went shopping for computers together and both bought the Toshiba Satellite C55-A5310. I have a lot more to learn about Windows 8.1, but I think I am progressing pretty well for a person of my age.

Decent Laptop

POSTED BY: Scott , Tulsa, OK
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Right out of the box, this laptop runs very smoothly. The six gigabyte ram, and the Intel graphics can help it run some games such as minecraft. The ram is able to be expanded to eight gigabytes, which is your typical Dell desktop. Performance wise, the laptop is wonderful. In terms of gaming, I would not recommend this laptop simply because of the graphics is only Intel 4000. The battery that came with the laptop is a six cell that lasts maybe three hours of continued use. That is, not using any games and just surfing the web. I haven't gotten the 12 cell yet, but there are many reviews saying they will increase battery life to 5-7 hours, depending on usage. As for the camera, if you expect to take a lot of pictures/video, be warned that the camera isn't anywhere near the best. You can see the individual pixels from where your sitting usually.

Longtime Toshiba User

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This is my second Toshiba laptop. The first one lasted 8+ years of heavy usage (Actually it is still in limited service but is no longer my full-time laptop). This unit is a recent purchase of a couple of months. It is lightweight and very responsive. Setting it up was easy. There are always a few mental adjustments to make when switching to a new computer but the transition has been smooth and I'm enjoying this new computer very much.

Great Value, Except for Display Screen

POSTED BY: Ronnigon , Orlando, Florida
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This is a very nice computer. It's put together well and the accessory software and all the amenities it came with were very thoughtful, but a big problem is the somewhat poor-quality screen. It's very hard on the eyes, and somewhat blurry.

Good Home Laptop

POSTED BY: technotard , Dallas, GA
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

We had to replace an old laptop, so I purchased the same one we got my son for graduation. For home use it's been great, even having to learn Windows 8.1. The only thing we don't like is if the curser is too close to the right edge of the screen, it opens up the settings when the curser is moved.

Very good laptop except for sound quality

POSTED BY: Slick , Louisiana
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I purchased this Toshiba laptop because I did not need one with all of the bells and whistles, i.e. touchscreen, gaming performance, massive storage capabilities. I was needing to upgrade due to win xp support ending. I have found out about the learning curve for windows 8.1, but adapting. The most glaring problem with this Toshiba (and other models I am finding out on support forums) is the very poor audio quality. The speakers used are so very "tinny" and I almost returned this unit because of that. After some adjustments I am dealing with it, although my old laptop had much better sound and it was a 2004 model HP. If you can suggest any enhancements to boost my sound quality, I would greatly appreciate it.

Good Laptop but HATE Windows 8

POSTED BY: Emmy , Knoxville, TN
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I love the laptop and would love it even more if it didn't have Windows 8 on it. I've already had 1 update that resolved some of the issues, but there needs to be a major overhaul to fix this one. This is just as bad, if not worse, then Vista. Why couldn't they just leave 7 alone or make some tweaks. I am, and have always been, please with the Toshiba Laptop products. This is my 4th one and I had an HP (which I immediately gave to my husband because the edge of the computer cut into my wrists).

Quality Laptop

POSTED BY: Jo , Boston, MA
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I got this computer because my older Toshiba's (Portege) keys began to fall off after 2.5 years of use. I read reviews on this product before getting it, and some users commented that the internet connection is not good. I thought that they just may not have had access to good Wi-Fi. But I notice a difference in the same location between this Toshiba and the old one. This one's connection is weaker, often disconnects from the Wi-Fi, can't connect, or has a weak internet connection, leading it to be slow for a new computer. However, for the price, this is still a good computer. I was concerned about Windows 8 or 8.1, coming from Windows 7, but it is very easy. This computer is not touch-screen, but I do not think touch-screen is necessary and not having touch-screen has not prohibited me from getting around on the computer in any way. The battery life is good for a computer this size, although it cannot compare to the laptops 13.3 inches or less, and tablets, which generally seem to have great battery life.

Looked like the best value for the money (for 15" i3 with 6GB). Have always had Dells before this. Numeric keyboard is nice but still getting used to some of key placements (e.g., delete). Only addition I'd want is backlit keyboard. WIN8 is about the only real drawback on this laptop.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I like the Toshiba laptops. Had one before this one until the video died. I am not keen on windows 8.1. It's a whole new way to move around and the whole swipe thing is annoying. I want to be able to move fast and the toshiba can do it but windows is so sensitive to every move you end up with things open and in your way which takes longer to get out of. I wish they would quit trying to make things so much better when most of the time it worked just fine before. It's takes us older people much longer to figure things out. I've been told to take a class...Who has the time and money? Change is usually good but not always great. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

POSTED BY: randomreview , United States
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I received this laptop as an early Christmas present a couple weeks before Christmas. The laptop was lighter than my last Toshiba (a205-s5000) and comparability quicker. The 6 gigs of ram and 750 gig hard drive is plenty large and powerful enough to play games like need for speed underground and similar games but I would not recommend it for games like Battlefield or Call of Duty. The cd/dvd drive can be noisy at times also when playing cd’s but being rare to actually finding one with a drive it does not bother me much. The hdmi output port provides crystal clear video to my 40 inch flat screen television and it is nice having three usb ports on the system. I would describe the battery life as above average and will last 3-4 hours doing normal work (typing, web searching, etc.). It is also nice that it includes the windows 8 operating system which is very simple after you get used to it. Overall I could not have asked for a better laptop.

Not used to Windows 8 so many of my issues probably can be resolved. Simple navigation is driving me crazy. If I want to go back to Previous page there are many options but usually only one works at a time. Sometimes there is no option and I have to revert back to Internet Explorer and navigate page all over again? The screen sometimes switches as soon as I move the arrow? Why? How to I lock into only one printer without picking it out each time? How do I stop the bottom Tabs from popping up all the time? They take up half of the screen!

Overall rating: 2 out of 5 2 out of 5

Sometimes it wants to access the internet, sometimes it doesn't feel like it! I returned one machine even after they attempted to update the "driver", but didnt really solve the problem. Some sites works fine, but try to go onto a site with a Youtube video playing on it (like there arent any of these right?) and you will have to wait a few minutes. Is it the operating system or the computer... no idea. But I just need this "good value" laptop to allow me to site on the couch and surf a few sites. This one doesnt do it and I am not interested in troubleshooting or fixing... I just want it to work out of the box!

This is by far the worse laptop for general use I have ever had. The keyboard is difficult to use, keys are hard to push down and the ten key side area is a waste. Granted I thought I would use the ten key side but I found it was more trouble than it was worth. I have resorted to getting my old laptop fixed so that is what I am using. This has nothing to do with Windows 8 at all since my older laptop now has that too.
