Toshiba Rocks!

POSTED BY: Sadie D.
Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

This is my 2nd Toshiba Satellite laptop. The first is 5 years old and still running. Battery life is good. I'm getting about 6-7 hours on a full charge. Excellent graphics and sound. Backlit keyboard makes working in a dark room easy. This laptop is very light and very slim. Processor speed is excellent. I have had other brands of laptops that were slow and broke down often. These last a long time. The first Toshiba I bought has never needed repair. I replaced the original battery after 2 years. I will definately purchase another Toshiba laptop in the future.

In the past, I have not had very much luck with laptops-they overheat, ect. Clearly with such a sorted history, I was very apprehensive about purchasing a laptop this time around. Thus far (I've only owned this for a little over 1 month#, this Toshiba is changing my mind about the laptop curse I had been experiencing. The speed is incredible. I find everything easy to use and the "help" sections make this laptop even better to navigate. I did purchase a cooling pad #which I highly recommend to anyone who is buying a laptop# which eliminates over heating #my biggest pet peeve in the past). Overall I would say that I am happy with my purchase.

I first got a Toshiba Satellite in 2005. No problems until lately with battery. Probably coulda been fixed but decided to treat myself to a new one, especially now that XP support is going away. For the price, looks and the Toshiba name I think I made a great decision with the E55. NOT CRAZY ABOUT WINDOWS 8 - but I will get over it. Goodbye XP - RIP!!!

Fast and very light no heavy attached battery like my old Toshiba, doesn't over heat (big plus), easy to travel with now. I didn't like Windows 8 at first but I'm loving it now. Overall great computer.

It is lesser in weight. The battery life is longer. The shut down is very fast. The browsing is very easy. I get updates from Toshiba often. The backlit is very good. Having used to Lenova the left /right click is little difficult.

Best bang for the buck.

This laptop boots up faster than my TV! It's fast, quiet and stable. The screen is very sharp. Windows 8.1 is more of a tablet system than a laptop OS. There are a few annoyances that I'll have to used to but I'll live.

My just-retired Toshiba Satellite laptop served me well for seven years, so it was easy to go with another Toshiba. I am not disappointed with this one either. It is sleek and lightweight, and the screen, keyboard, and touchpad make it a pleasure to use. Setup was easy enough, but there is one caveat about creating the system recovery media when you first start it up. This laptop does not have a DVD drive, so I chose to create the recovery media using a USB flash drive. For some reason you cannot use a SanDisk flash drive to create the recovery media. Any other manufacturer will do. This turns out to be a known problem, but obviously I didn’t know about it. Other than wasting $20 on the first flash drive, the setup was easy. I was able to set up all my software, including Microsoft Office, Quicken, and printer drivers without needing a DVD drive. The laptop is very quiet, with no fan or disk noise unless you are in a quiet room and listen for it. The speakers are of course no match for an external 2.1 (or higher) sound system, but they are by far the best speakers I have ever heard on a laptop. The keyboard is perfect: it is backlit, has a good feel to the keys, and you can type without the cursor jumping around or the touchpad picking up false taps. (This was the only problem with my other Toshiba – I had to disable the touchpad for any typing job and use a USB mouse.) The touchpad has just the right sensitivity. As long as you tap it right in the middle, you can move around very quickly and tap the pad, rather than click the left/right buttons. This makes it preferable to a touchscreen in my opinion. Why reach over a keyboard and move up to 15” across a big screen when you can do the same thing with a four-inch touchpad? I have not used the battery all the way down to empty. However, after using it a few hours and looking at the projected remaining time, it looks like it will provide between five and six hours, or even more with light use. This means I can go to any meeting or work session without having to take along a power supply, mouse, or DVD drive. It does not have the slot for a cable lock to attach to the base, so you can’t secure it to anything if you want to step away for a minute in a public place. You won’t go wrong with this laptop. I am very pleased with it.

This is my second Toshiba laptop. I get what I need for the price. I just need a basic laptop for paying bills and documents. It was easy to set up. I love the new lighted back keyboard and large keys. I hope it last longer than my last laptop. Making a purchase every 4-5 years for something that has little use is my only con. But Im told that is how technology works.

Solid Performance

POSTED BY: JJ , Oregon
Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I am pleased with the performance so far on the laptop, however I must say that I do not care much for the Windows 8 . I am starting to get used to it, but it is annoying having to locate functions that used to be easily accessable and are now obscured and almost hidden. I like the backlighted keyboard a lot as well as the metal silver top cover. This has been my best laptop so far. I have had several top line HP's and prefer this Toshiba. It is quiet and does not heat up hardly at all compared to my HPs.

In comparison with my old laptop, I've gone from driving an old hooptie to a Cadillac. The backlit keyboard with the 10-key pad was one of the big draws for this computer, and I love it. It's light and easy to pick up with one hand. I really like everything except the grainy webcam, but I hardly ever use that so it's not that big a deal and I am sure I could look into adjusting it if I really cared. There's been a learning curve to the mouse but it's pretty much my lazy fingers when things go wrong. I think this pad is more sensitive than my old laptop. It's fast enough for everything I do, and altogether, I am glad I purchased it rather than the tablet/keypad setup I considered, which looked to cheap and flimsy I couldn't stand it. I have enjoyed using it very much and have had no regrets as yet. The battery life has been a pleasant surprise. My old laptop barely functioned when not plugged in, this one, you can't even tell.

Very nice laptop. I like the Windows 8.1 operating system. Very happy to see this change from 8.0. The overall quality is great. I am having challenges with the mousepad and getting used to it - it's very sensistive and will enlarge the screen if not using the right "touch". Overall, I am very happy with the laptop.

Did not like the absence of an internal DVD-RW, this caused some software installation problems using an external drive. Would to like to have DVD and picture software included, Windows 8 applications were very poor substitutes for having installed software. Windows 8 was the worse than Vista, constantly having problems. I did like how light it was, it has great speed, it has great battery life, the display is very nice, and it is great to actually have an USB-3 port. I would recommend this product.

We bought this laptop to replace my 9-year old Toshiba Satellite (which would still work well if it had another OS). Overall, you get a lot for a great price. But I have 2 gripes. One is based on Windows 8.1: it took at least 20 minutes for the laptop to boot up for the first time. This is ridiculously slow! And when it started up, it was so slow because there were like 40 programs running at the same time. Several reboots and many deleted programs later, it runs great! My second gripe is the poor quality of the resolution of the text in the windows and on the screen. The text is definitely not as sharp as it should be. I also noticed a similar problem with my previous Satellite laptop. Overall, this laptop has a lot of basic features for the money and is a great device for basic computing and watching videos.

Terrible Speakers

POSTED BY: brently , Bend, OR
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

The speakers on this.. Are just terrible.. I don't get a surround sound feeling what so ever, I'm 99% sure that the left speaker is blown in it because it rattles all the time on any volume. its not that big of a deal, still a let down, but what ever I use a headset 99% of the time. but in all honest.. I've never liked Toshiba to begin with.. what brought me to this computer is the fact that its 1080P 6gb of ram and the 750HDD and the i5 processor.. other then that.. I'm surprised at how well built this thing is, plus I love the keyboard on it as well!! Will I take my time to send this product in for repair? Probably not because I seriously spent 5 days pulling every thing off my old laptop onto this one and I just don't want to go through the hassle of sending it in to get it fixed because like I said.. I don't really care for the speakers because of my headset. I'm sure I'll care someday, but right now, not that important. I love the performance of this computer and Toshiba, you've made me a believer!

First time owning a Toshiba and so far everything is good. Have only had this unit for about 6 weeks though. Hope it holds up over the long haul. What I don't like about it was that I had to get Windows 8 with it and at this point I still hate Windows 8. 7 was much simpler and better. Don't know why companies don't make it an option on which version you get.

Really happy with my Toshiba laptop, the only reason I did not give it 5 starts is because I have only had it for a few months. I am sure it will last me a good while with proper computer maintenance. Really sleek looking, smooth keyboard, back lit keys, good specs for the price. Definitely good for a little higher end performance. Great for work! The only con I can think of is in the sound but then again I did not buy it to listen to music or watch movies lol I have another comp for that!

I like the backlit keyboard and the numerical keyboard. The widescreen format does not appeal to me. I hate the mouse pad which goes from (way) overly sensitive to (way) under sensitive. It also highlights broad sections of your page at random. The mouse buttons are hard to find by touch alone and don't always respond to pushing them. Paired with Win8, the whole experience is something to be avoided, unless you like frustration.
