This is a very good laptop. The processing speed is the fastest of any laptop I've ever used, and it can handle a LOT of multitasking. The only issue I have, and this is a very small issue, is that when the battery is low, it doesn't give much warning.

I'm an Internet Sales Manager for a Lexus dealership in Houston TX and on the computer all day every day and when I come home I need to only check emails and research topics that I like. This Laptop is perfect for what I need and it's the second Laptop from Toshiba in four years. I love it!

Toshiba has ALWAYS been good (for me)

POSTED BY: Bubbles , Hampton, VA
Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

I've had my Toshiba Satellite for approximately a month now. In my opinion, it's very 'user friendly'! I read many comments about the new Windows 8 & was very reluctant to get this laptop (or any other laptop with Windows 8). I have absolutely no clue what the big fuss is about. Ok, there's no actual 'Start' button to select. But, all I have to do is scroll my mouse to the bottom, left-hand corner and a small window appears that says 'START'! All of the tiles are in the 'Start' box and it's really not that hard to go through the tiles and find what you're looking for (i.e. camera, music, Netflix, etc.). And the ESC (escape) button is my friend, when exiting the start menu. I did have a moment of confusion, as far as knowing how to shut my laptop off. So, I looked up the information on Google (too easy!) If you want to open a new window and you notice other windows that you thought you exited out of, just scroll your mouse over the upper, right-hand corner of that window (without actually clicking on it) & click on the red 'x'. Sometimes, it takes more than one or two clicks to fully exit the window. I came to the conclusion that, that's because I did more than one search in that window. I'm not sure if there's a "better" way to exit a window but this way works fine for me. It gets the 'job' done! Windows 8 isn't as complicated and "scary" as some of the comments proclaimed it to be! The ONLY difference (that I'm aware of) is that all the stuff that's automatically visible on Windows 7 ('start' button, power button, tool menu, etc.) aren't automatically visible on Windows 8. But, all I have to do is either scroll my mouse to the bottom, left-hand corner or the upper, right-hand corner of my screen. I really dislike the fact that people are so quick to share negative comments about people and things that they cannot (readily) comprehend. To be calm and patient is to have understanding because anger is irrational! All that has been typed in this review is typed by someone who is almost ABSOLUTELY illiterate, when it comes to technology! (I get cell phones and mini computers confused with each other. I think the mini computers are referred to as tablets or something.) My husband usually has to teach me how to operate a lot of the functions on our televisions/remotes, how to do things on computers/laptops, how to operate the game consoles, etc. But, I figured out this Windows 8 Toshiba Satellite laptop (with God's help through a little prayer), in about an hour or less. I personally dislike the fact that technology keeps changing but it's the way of our lives in 'this day & age'. Why did I purchase a Windows 8 laptop instead of a Windows 7 laptop? Windows 8 is extremely cheaper than Windows 7!

I received this laptop for my birthday and it has been a great machine. It has the larger keyboard with the number pad that I wanted. The keyboard has a nice feel. The mouse pad works better than I expected. The only thing I wish it had was a longer battery life but I use this primarily from home anyway. I am very pleased with this laptop and would highly recommend one to my family & friends. I have always wanted a Toshiba laptop and I am very pleased.

Overall, I like this computer. Screen size is great. I would prefer longer space bar even if that means not having the right side numeric keys. Also, would have preferred not to have had Microsoft 8 installed. It is a challenge to learn new ways to navigate. In many cases, it has gone from one step to multiple steps to get to the final results ... e.g. printing a document.

I have been unemployed for a while now and didn't have much money to spend. But when my daughter requested that I return her computer to her I found myself without contact with my family and friends. So I went computer shopping, like most people on the web. This sweet little laptop was my dream come true. It does everything I will need to do quickly and efficiently and at a price even I could afford. Thanks Toshiba for looking out for the little guys.

Good laptop for the money

POSTED BY: Jim , Lubbock Texas
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

The Toshiba L855D-S5117 is a good value for the money . Their is only 2 problems that I personally have with it (1) Windows 8 I am a Windows 7 fan. (2) the CPU cooling vents could be a little larger to help cool it. I relay like the LED monitor it is less harsh on the eyes and is very clear and sharp. My main reason for choosing this lap top was the AMD microprocessor since I personally prefer the AMD over the other brand I have been using them for 20 years and grown to trust their reliability and performance.

Good value; great performance

This laptop is a good value for the money. If you are a student or a business person using MS Office, internet & email this will be an excellent laptop. It is even great for watching videos and Hulu. I am not a big fan of the Windows 8. It was designed for touch screens and it is a bit difficult to navigate with a mouse.

Laptop great value but monitor needs a rethink.

POSTED BY: dhatha , Knoxville, TN

Size of keyboard, key spacing - EXCELLENT! Mousepad - more impressive with each use. Ergonomics are excellent and a big factor for someone like me who wants a notebook (larger keyboard, monitor, etc). The screen resolution is not great and when viewing from an indirect angle it gets worse quickly. I did add 8GB of RAM (now at 12GB) and that did help for overall performance including the OS of Windows 8.... which leads me back to the monitor which is not touch.

It doesn't pretend to be a high-end laptop. It does what it is supposed to. The speaker is horrible, with headphones the sound is fine. The worst thing about it is that it comes with Windows 8. What a horrible mess!

Good laptop for the money

POSTED BY: Jim1955 , Georgia
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This computer is well built and seems sturdy. It is fairly thin and light. The performance is good with the quad-core AMD processor. Windows 8 took a little getting used to, but that is beyond the scope of this review. The computer boots quickly, and is ready to use in a few seconds. It handles the standard office tasks well and quickly. Video playback is good from sites like Youtube, etc. I have not tried the DVD drive, but have no reason to believe it would be any less than good. One quibble I do have is the speaker volume is low and it is hard to get enough signal out of it. The WiFi works well, I have an N router in the other end of the house and get reliable and speedy connections with this machine. All in all, I am happy with this computer and would recommend it to others. I would have to tell them to get a good set of earphones though.

Review on Computer

POSTED BY: Tsonata , Beaver, PA

My overall satisfaction is good my disappointment is in the fact that there are no Microsoft products, you have to purchase Micrososft office in order to really get the computer to function on the level that I need it too. That was a big disappointment on my part. The other disappointment is that I do not like Window 8, I feel that it is hard to use and that it is not user friendly. I feel that customers should have the option of the operating system that they like or want and not be forced to take Windows 8.

Nice laptop. Runs everything I want it to, even a couple games. Windows 8 is a pain to get used to. The only thing I really don't like about this computer is the speakers. They don't sound very good. If I'm just surfing the net and not watching videos, the battery lasts quite a long time.

very good laptop

This laptop is everything I was hoping it would be. I've used Toshiba product for the past few years and I've always had a good experience. My only issue with my l855d s5117 is that the built in speakers are not good at all.

Very Cheap

Overall rating: 3 out of 5 3 out of 5

I now wish I would have gone with my original intent to purchase a different brand of LapTop and not have listened to the salesperson in the store. I have owned Toshiba LapTops in the past and have always had good performance. This particular laptop is constructed so cheap that you can not even stand to listen to anything from the installed speakers. The sound is so bad that it is hard to even understand what is being said, sounds like the speaker is at the bottom of an old tin can. The screen definition is very poor and it is hard to distinguish between the background and the program screen. I have tried the adjustments without a real acceptable result. Needless to say I am not happy with this particular purchase. I travel for my job and did not have time to really set this laptop up until today. I actually purchased it on the 5th of May and would return it and even purchase a higher level unit, but the store in which I purchased the laptop has a 15 day exchange policy which I naturally have missed. As I stated previously I have owned Toshiba laptops in the past and have always been happy with their performance. I am not against moving up to a better grade unit from Toshiba, but I think they just cut too much quality from this laptop and it does not perform as well as lesser known units.

My husband and I purchased this laptop a few weeks ago, since our desktop has finally passed on. There is some problem with Internet explorer that has to stop and reload everytime there is a new page (or folder, perhaps) and then will continue. I've read a lot of similar problems online as well. I'm not real happy with it at this time. That is really my only issue tho so if that were fixed I think I'd love it

3/4 of the screen goes white. It is obviously a fault in the workmanship or connections of the screen. I'm not happy with this product since I can't use it about 1/2 the time when I need to. This screen will not allow me to use the laptop about 80 % of the time. I need to know what I can do since I've only had the product for 5 weeks.

This is my first lap top. I'm sorry I didn't get another pc as I find this machine very hard to get around on it. I am having a very hard time with my photos and organizing them, or even finding them. maybe a more expensive lap top is easier to use. This is not a user friendly computer.

PRO:The internet speed is good CONS: The mouse freezes up 4-5 times a day . To unfreeze the screen you have to hold the power button down until it shuts off. This should not be happening with a brand new computer. The speakers are about average when using headphones

Windows 8 ruins use experience

Overall rating: 1 out of 5 1 out of 5

Windows 8 is not a user friendly operating system and as a result the suse of the Toshiba has been made difficult with a need for work-arounds. Performing what were previously simple acts now take much longer, if it can be figured out at all. In brief my experience has been HORRIBLE-- worse than the Vista debacle.

Windows 8 and all those horrible apps should be tossed in the trash and never seen again. This is the most difficult computer I have ever had. When AOL is opened, it is 2.5 inches in length and partly fillls the screen. When i click on the enlarge square, the width moves a lttle not the length. I havve to "pull' the lenght down to get the screen to a useable size. Howeverm when ever i change to another screen for AOL. it is right back to 2.5 lengh and I have to start the procss all over again. SO exasperating!

Don't buy.

Overall rating: 1 out of 5 1 out of 5

I have a couple laptops and a Toshiba Desktop as well. I am using this laptop primarily for when I travel for work. I want a bigger screen to work on than the 13" HP that I have. The Good: Price is good...not great, but not bad. The processor hums along well for most things, but I haven't tried any graphic intensive programs yet other than a few movies, word and powerpoint. That's about it. The Bad: The feel of this laptop is cheap. When I pick it up it feels like I am going to crush it. The keyboard is bad, the entire the depresses when you type. The mousepad is okay but the buttons on the mouse are loud and only work if you press them with severe force. The Ugly: The speakers are terrible. I have not heard speakers this bad on a computer or laptop since, well ever. I can't explain it, but they are absolutely terrible. They are not loud, which isn't a big deal, but the are tinny and seem to echo and just outright bad. Did you steal them off a laptop from 1995? You can't even listen to is like a cat being run over by someone scraping their fingernails on a chalkboard. Terrible. The wireless adapter is ugly, it constantly drops the network and it doesn't matter which network or where I am. The screen has a terrible viewing angle and is way too dim. No matter how much brightness you add it is just terrible. And don't get me started on all the bloatware that is pre-loaded and you can't remove...waste of space and time. Overall: I am away for a month from home and can't return this piece of plastic because I left the box and manuals at home. If I had the box with me I would return it in a heartbeat. I doubt it will last a year judging by the quality of the build. Terrible cheaply made product...don't waste your time or money on this thing.
