but, since it had windows 8 and that wasn't compatible to my other programs, I had to return this laptop and get another brand that still had windows 7.

When purchased my lap top I was just looking for something to pay bills and look up quilting projects and surfing the net a little. This lap top gave me something to really play around with, its a breeze to get around on and has so many apps to do things its actually fun to be on.

Great Laptop, Jury still out on Win-8

So far this has been a great laptop. The one thing I'm not sure if I like yet is Windows 8. Battery life is good but would like more. It boots up very quickly, I really appreciate that! This is the first one I've had that didn't have a center of the key board mouse button which I have grown to really like over the years. I continually touch the touch pad (which I have always disabled in the past in favor of the button) with the heal of my hand while i'm typing which messes me up but I am getting used to it. The screen is great, very bright. All in all a very good laptop and again probably the biggest complaint is battery life.

My experience seems to mirror other buyers. My expensive HP laptop had major problems. My next laptop was a Toshiba. It was a pleasure - I still have it. But, and it is a big but - Windows 8 is not for me. Difficult to navigate and heavy on the apps. But, It is a terrific machine at even more terrific price.

This laptop has all of the features that are normally found in a much higher priced model. While I'm still having some problems adjusting to Windows 8 from Xp; I've been able to get most of my question answered from my Grandson. This is not a gaming computer, although it can handle some of them, it is mostly for the everyday or intermediate user. I originally bought one for my Grandaughter and liked its features so much that I had to get one for myself. So far I am totally pleased with it.

I love the laptop but when it come to the operating windows I do not like it. Windows 7 were a lot better for me at less. I don't know why is that a computer or a laptop can be set basic on a costumer preference and not a monopoly decision if I wanted windows 8 I will request to be set with it but if not I will rater choose the windows I rater have than be force to by a product with a system already chosen for me. Now this is how I feel about the windows in my laptop. Other than that I love my laptop.

THIS IS THE SECOND TOSHIBA LAPTOP THAT I'VE OWNED. I GAVE MY FIRST ONE TO MY DAUGHTER AND IT STILL WORK GREAT. I LIKE THE COSTUMER SERVICE JUST AS MUCH AS I LIKE THE PRODUCT, AND THAT MEANS A LOT TO ME. EVERY TOSHIBA LAPTOP THAT I'VE OWNED HAS BEEN VERY DEPENDABLE PLUS I LIKE THE FEATURES THAT COMES WITH IT. I WOULDN'T TRADE THIS BRAND FOR ANYTHING ELSE, IT MEETS ALL MY NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS.GREAT JOB, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

I love the laptop but some of the built in program are driving me mad. like backing up to the cloud, I back up my self but they contently asking me to back it up and lock programs until i respond to it. I keep thing on my computer that I need to keep off the cloud. There are some app's I want but they do not have them also the cake I finely had to remove it. If I want to buy from a site I don't need cake sending me some where else just because it thinks it's a better deal. just the same I love Toshiba if you need a up grade 3 to 5 years from now they will have it when hp, dell, acer and other quit supporting their computers

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 5 out of 5

Great computer. Fast. Stable (the machine). Sharp screen. Love it. Windows 8, not so much. The world really needs to find an alternative to Microsoft for non-Mac/Apple users. Too bad the big manufacturers and software developers cannot get together and set up a team of developers to create a user friendly, touch-screen version of Unix or a completely new OS from the ground up. It's time.

Less that expected

POSTED BY: Kenra , Ashland, KY
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

As a novelist, I often need multiple programs open simultaneously as well as more than one browser window with several tabs each. My old Acer Aspire, win7, very rarely generated low memory messages, and only in the last 6 months of it's 3 yr lifespan. My new Toshiba Satellite generated multiple low memory messages the first day I used it for work. My old Toshiba Satellite, win XP, is still running and has only had a couple low memory messages. I expected my new Toshiba Satellite to be at least as powerful as my old Acer.

Very good laptop, but....

POSTED BY: cavalry36
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Only 2 things that but me about this laptop, otherwise everything else is great. 1) The mouse pad. You don't have to touch it and your screen either gets to big or to small. I'm a very good typist and have never ran into this problem on any other lap top before. 2) The battery life maybe be average, but it laptop can use it very quickly. Don't bother putting it on the performance mode unless plugged in unless you want less then 4 hrs.

First Laptop Ever Owned

POSTED BY: Peony614 , Franklin, WI
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This is the first laptop I've ever purchased. I did a lot of research and it was between an Asus or Toshiba. I'm glad I chose this Toshiba. I'm not a gamer, as far as, detailed games - only Facebook style. Therefore, speed for that does not concern me. I use it mainly for e-mail, FB, updating my website, picture uploading, ITunes, and of course, Microsoft Office, and for those applications I'm happy with the speed. Let's face it, I was coming from using a Dell Desktop variety, where it took almost 5 minutes for the internet to load! Anything was an improvement. Once you get the hang of Windows 8 it's really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be - it's change and some people can't handle change. I'm still finding out new things about the laptop, but I'm very happy with it. The only thing I have to get used to is the keypad -- still having issues with that, as far as, some keys really need a bit more pressure. Reviews are a dime a dozen, and each individuals' needs are different - go with what your gut tells you. Let's face it - laptops are not meant to last forever, unfortunately - all companies want you to continually buy new ones at least every 5 years. If I get that out of this, I'll be happy.

Very Good S855D-S5120

POSTED BY: DMcN's , Sturgeon Bay, WI
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

It seems to be a stable computer, which counts for allot, it is fast and the battery lasts a long time. The product information is lacking though, and the Desktop Assistant is questionable but it seems to work..? It is not easily noticed that the updates should be installed before upgrading to Win8.1 so if upgrading update drivers first...

Best laptop i found for the $

POSTED BY: mjchunk54 , Illinois

I picked this up on clearance due to it being a discontinued model. I love the speed. The AMD A-10 kicks some serious butt. However, I have already lost a USB connection on the left side plug, otherwise it would be a 5 star. I haven't had time to run the diag on it, but it may just be a driver issue. That was the one I used for my mouse (because all trac pads suck). Even so, I haven't had any major issues. I had BSOD on a Lenovo a week after I had it. None of that here! definitely a great value.

Home Laptop

POSTED BY: Hockeydoodle
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I needed a laptop for home use, newer than my old 1.8GHz pentium with decent speed and a good display. This Toshiba so far is very good, despite getting to know Win8 I've got lots of applications going and with multiple windows it works well. Battery time is in excess of 4 hours but haven't tested that extensively.

POSTED BY: AbyssalNoob
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

The AMD Quad-Core A10-4600M APU is sufficiently fast for regular use and for some moderate gaming, this laptop has plenty of RAM and is just overall good looking. Battery life is average at best compared to laptops in this price range. The only problem I had was a single dead pixel which is a bit of an annoyance (I don't believe it's covered by the warranty) which is why it lost 1 star from me.

Better without Windows 8

POSTED BY: Scooter , Raleigh, NC
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

Overall, I am very happy with the Toshiba Satellite laptop. For the price, it had a good CPU, memory and hard drive. The memory is expandable, which is one of the main reasons I selected this model over a similar HP model. I immediately stripped off Windows 8 (puke) and installed Linux. I had a brief snag when I had to locate a new driver for the video. Once I had that, everything is good and the laptop works like a dream.

Nice Laptop

POSTED BY: Spanky , Orofino, ID.
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

I've had this laptop a couple of months now. It's a lot faster than my ancient Del XPS. It did not include a lot of frills like previous computers I've owned ie. no word processing or video editing etc. but it made for a better price point. I like the size of the screen its not quite as clear as my daughters HP but is still nice and clear. It is not an illuminated keyboard but it has enormous lettering on the keys making it easy to read. The cd/dvd tray is flimsy and hard to eject. I can't tell you about the touch pad as I use a wireless trackball. Windows 8 is a bit weird but It wont take long to figure out. All in all a good investment.

Reliability was the main reason for purchasing Toshiba, windows hate [8] has changed all that. Machine seems short on installed programs but has a plethora for "buy me" apps. One of the reasons I purchased was because of my wifes luck with her Toshiba laptop [windows 7].

Decent Laptop / Good Value

POSTED BY: Mortician , Damascus, MD
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 4 out of 5

This laptop seems to be geared for videos and gaming, which i do none of. I purchased it because it came with 8GB RAM and was a good price point for this. I'm able to run 2 VMs and have very good performance (previous laptop had only 4 g and was extremely slow running just 1 VM). Keyboard layout is ok, but having to hit the FN key to get the function key is again indicative that the default layout is for videos. I also mostly have a second screen attached, the connection does not have holes to accept the screws from the VGA cable. Makes me worried I'm going to bend a pin, so need to be careful here. Wireless antenna has good range.

As shipped, the HD contains 4 partitions. The MSDOS limit (even for NTFS) is 5. I attempted to shrink the C: partition and the system went into a permanent "fix" mode and would not exit. This unit will not allow you to install a second operating system. It went back to the retailer for refund.

Fine machine, but Win 8??? Uhgggg!!

POSTED BY: rrwatch , Pooler, GA
Overall rating: 3 out of 5 3 out of 5

I'm pleased with this laptop (it is my 2nd Toshiba laptop), but unless all you are interested in is social media interaction, stay away from any computer that has Windows 8 installed. Right now I have a decision to make, rip out Win 8 and install Win 7 or install one of the programs out there that will make Win 8 "look like" Win 7. Toshiba should have given the customer a choice of operating systems.

Ever since the first time I used this laptop, it had given me some problems. It has trouble restarting and programs tend to close randomly. Even during the first week I was presented with a blue screen and a pfn_list_corrupt error. Perhaps it's just a Windows 8 issue, but there are certain things I can and cannot do with this laptop. My last HP laptop was half the price and never gave me these issues.
