Toshiba Releases 125V Super Charged Lithium ion Battery (SCiB) Energy Storage System

HOUSTON, TX – May 31, 2022 – Toshiba International Corporation (TIC) is proud to announce the launch of the Toshiba 125VDC SCiB Energy Storage System (ESS), providing reliability of the Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) battery chemistry in a versatile and scalable cabinet design. The Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS cabinet is an environmentally resilient energy storage solution for the following markets: Oil, Gas and Petrochemical 125VDC stand-alone Distributive Control Systems (DCS), Industrial UPS systems with a 125VDC battery, and Utility switchgear with 125VDC control power. The Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS comes in user sizes of 5kWh, 10kWh, 15kWh and 20kWh to pair with Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) or DC Load applications. The innovative cabinet design of the Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS consists of SCiB battery trays and a SCiB controller tray in each DC string. Each DC string is fully isolated for built in redundancy or modular run time capacity. The Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS removable tray design provides easy serviceability and field inspection, making the Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS an excellent option for the critical load power for an energy supply system in the industrial and utility market.

Each 125VDC SCiB ESS cabinet comes housed in its own NEMA 1 Enclosure, in compliance with ICC-ES AC156-2015 seismic shake table testing. By taking advantage of Toshiba’s lithium ion's LTO battery energy density, the Toshiba 125VDC ESS has a small footprint with dimensions of 23.5" x 44.5" x 80.8" (W x D x H), about half the size of a comparable valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery storage solution. The Toshiba 23Ah modules are manufactured with optimal quality at Toshiba’s state of the art Clean/Super Dry environment factory in Kashiwazaki, Japan. The Toshiba SCiB cells making up the 23Ah (Amp hour) modules in Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS battery trays completed the UL9540A battery test method without fire, explosion, or expulsion of harmful chemicals, making it one of the safest backup energy supply solutions on the market.

The Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS cabinet is shipped fully loaded with Toshiba SCiB 23Ah modules in the SCiB ESS battery trays, making the ESS installation and start up uncomplicated and convenient for the end-user. For serviceability, both the SCiB controller and SCiB battery trays are easily removed from the front of the cabinet. With full front access, the Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS cabinets require 0” rear clearance allowing placement right up against a wall, minimizing the site space requirements for their backup energy supply solution. Rugged casters are included on the Toshiba 125VDC ESS cabinets allowing for easy placement at the site.

With the Toshiba RemotEye ESS card included in each controller tray, customers can monitor the status of their Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS cabinet locally and / or remotely via SNMP and Modbus RTU and TCP communication protocols. With the new RemotEye ESS web application, customers can view warnings and faults on their cell phone or computer, giving them peace of mind regarding the health of their critical load backup power. Utilizing Modbus RTU and TCP communication protocols, the RemotEye ESS easily connects to a site BMS (Building Management System) communication network. A new touchscreen Human Machine Interface (HMI) allows on board monitoring and control of the Toshiba 125VDC ESS.

The 125VDC SCiB ESS has superior return on investment over VRLA battery systems, with low maintenance and virtually no module replacement for the life cycle of a UPS system. By migrating from pre-existing VRLA systems to Toshiba’s SCiB batteries, you no longer need the eye wash station, spill containment, and hydrogen gassing sensing or exhaust failure circuitry in the ESS room that lead acid batteries systems require. With 20 times longer-lasting life than comparable VRLA systems and backed by Toshiba’s best-in-class 12-year full on-site warranty, the Toshiba 125VDC SCiB ESS utilizes the safe and dependable Toshiba SCiB lithium-ion energy to deliver a stress-free, long-lasting, and reliable energy storage solution.
