Toshiba Railway Systems Completes 6-Year Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Project

Houston Manufacturing Plant Delivers Final Motors & Traction Systems for D.C.-area Railways
HOUSTON, TX — Nov. 2, 2018 —

Toshiba International Corporation (TIC) today announced that it has officially completed a 6-years long manufacturing project for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) based in Washington, D.C. The major order for key railway equipment and systems began in January 2012 and included propulsion systems and communication and monitoring systems (CAMS) for 748 rail cars.

“Toshiba is proud to be completing this long-term project to provide end-users in our nation’s capital with reliable daily commuter transportation for years to come,” said Kyle Kem, President of the Toshiba Social Infrastructure Group and Senior Vice-President of Toshiba International Corporation. “Toshiba has a proven history of creating innovative railway systems solutions and the completion of the WMATA project concludes another chapter in our brand’s story.”

Toshiba Corporation has manufactured transportation systems dating back to 1899. WMATA was created in 1967 to develop and manage a transportation system in the Washington, D.C. area. Today, WMATA serves 91 stations via 117 miles of track.

Expert assembly and engineering staff at the 55-acre TIC manufacturing facility in Houston, TX, fulfilled the WMATA project order for traction motors, propulsion inverters, CAMS, and other products. The team recently gathered to commemorate the accomplishment and present individual awards to the Houston manufacturing plants and key project staff.

Toshiba's highly-dependable railway systems simplify maintenance, reduce noise, and conserve energy. Features include highly accurate and responsive torque control based on vector control. While supplying systems for heavy rail, commuter rail, and light rail, Toshiba transportation systems have proven to be reliable in all types of rugged environments.
