Toshiba International Corporation Begins Construction of St. Croix Solar Project

4 Megawatt Solar Project to Reduce Fuel Costs by More than $1.7 Million

Toshiba International Corporation, HOUSTON, TX—June 16, 2014—Toshiba International Corporation (TIC), a leading provider of power generation, transmission, distribution, and renewable energy solutions, has begun construction of a 4 megawatt (MW) solar generation facility in Estate Spanish Town of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The project is expected to reduce fuel costs by more than $1.7 million and generate $3.5 million for the local economy during construction.

"The new solar generation facility will greatly benefit the people of the US Virgin Islands through energy cost savings, reduced fossil fuel dependency, and local jobs during construction," said Mark Lonkevych, business unit manager at Toshiba International Corporation. "We are on schedule and making good progress toward the projected completion date of late 2014."

Progress to date includes completion of the security perimeter and solar panel rack installation. The team will continue completion of the racking system this summer followed by electrical and construction.

The solar system consists of 16,748 poly-crystalline photovoltaic modules supported by corrosion-resistant racking, nine Toshiba inverters, and several transformers. The power plant is estimated to produce over 8,300,000 kilowatt-hours annually for the U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The electricity produced by the system each year is equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 1,500 St. Croix homes and is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5,792 metric tons or the equivalent of 1,219 cars.
