Training for all Adjustable Speed Drives is held at the Toshiba International Corporation site located at 13131 West Little York Rd, Houston, TX 77041. UPS training classes are held at 10435 Okanella St, Houston, TX 77041. The only exceptions are for custom training at the customer’s specified location.
How do I enroll?
Registration for training courses is done through our Absorb LMS website. Please click
here to login or create an account. All regularly scheduled classes will be accessible, and tuition costs will be shown. Once you have successfully enrolled in a course, an enrollment confirmation email will be sent. For customized training courses, you will be provided an email with enrollment instructions once the request has been sent to
TIC-ASD-TRAINING@toshiba.com.
I enrolled but I didn’t get confirmation. How can I get confirmation?
For classes requiring payment, you should receive an automated enrollment confirmation email immediately, but an approval email will not be received until payment arrangements are made. Because people frequently enroll then disenroll, the Training Department does not typically contact the student until about one month before the scheduled class convening date to finalize payment arrangements. If you wish to make payment arrangements sooner, please contact us via email. If you are within two weeks of a class and payment has not been arranged, contact us immediately! Students who have not made arrangements for payment within one week of class convening are emailed and, if no reply is received, they are disenrolled. See also “How do I pay for classes” below.
How late can I enroll?
Enrollment ends Sunday at 11:59 PM one week prior to class convening. After that time, the class will not be available on the website for enrollment. This is to allow for class preparation for the registered number of students and finalizing payment.
I received a disenrollment mail. Why?
Generally the only reason for disenrollment is if the class is within one week of convening and there has been no contact regarding payment. If this happens and you still plan to attend, you need to contact us IMMEDIATELY! Toshiba is not liable for expenses incurred as a result of cancellation due to non-payment of tuition. Students arriving for class and not having made payment arrangements will not be allowed to attend class.
When do classes start and end?
Classes normally start at 8:30 AM and run until 4:30 PM with an hour for lunch. Class requirements may allow or necessitate adjustment after the first day. Students may arrive early however, the lobby at the West Little York facility is not open until 7:50 AM and classrooms may not be open until 8:00 AM.
What about lunch?
Lunch is provided for all class days. If you have dietary requirements, we request you contact us so we can plan accordingly. We can readily accommodate requests for most medical reasons; vegan, kosher, and halal. Please contact us for any other requirements.
How much do classes cost?
Applications classes are free of charge to the customer. Field Service classes cost varies, please see the website when you enroll. For custom training, please request a quote via email at
TIC-ASD-Training@toshiba.com
How do I pay for classes?
If your company has an account with us, you can pay via Purchase Order. If not, you can pay via credit card. Credit cards require pre-validation with our finance department before you are approved to attend class, but you will not be charged until you attend. POs will not be billed until after class. Please be aware that cancellation with less than 14 days notice will incur a cancellation penalty. A no-show penalty will apply if the student does not show for class and does not cancel in advance.
What’s included in the tuition cost?
Tuition, training materials and manuals, lunch, and usually dinner one evening after class. Typically dinner is the second day of class. Coffee, soft drinks, and water are provided during class.
What is not included in the tuition cost?
Transportation to/from Houston, to/from hotel to training facility, hotel cost, breakfast, dinner most days, or anything not listed as included.
Which hotels should I stay at?
Toshiba International Corporation does not recommend any particular hotel or chain however, for customer convenience, we provide a list of hotels
here that are in close proximity to Toshiba and offer Toshiba discounted rates. We also note which hotels offer shuttle service to and from Toshiba. We do recommend verifying with the hotel before booking your reservation concerning shuttle service as conventions may affect shuttle availability times. We do not keep track of which hotels have Wi-Fi and breakfast included in the daily rate.
What do I need to bring?
A thirst for knowledge is foremost! A laptop is recommended for all ASD classes. Field Service classes typically provide software and cables required for connection to the equipment being trained on. If you install the software during class, we can help you ensure it is working correctly before you finish class. Be aware that your company’s IT restrictions may prevent installing software or drivers necessary to connect to equipment. Copies of software will be provided for later installation by your IT department and are downloadable from the website for free for most classes. Notetaking and writing materials are provided for classes. Connection cables are generally provided for Field Service classes.

An adjustable speed drives accept AC voltage input, rectifies it to DC voltage, then inverts it back out as three-phase AC voltage at variable frequencies for use on AC motors.
Why should I use an adjustable speed drive?
A few examples include providing process control, variable speed applications, protecting the motor from overload situations, unlimited motor starts, extending the life and reducing maintenance on AC motors, enabling massive energy savings and many more.
What kind of energy savings are involved?
In addition to the elimination or reduction of motor inrush current, drives provide near unity power factor, reduction of energy consumption by reducing the motor speed to match the process requirements, and provide reduced energy usage through the affinity laws for variable torque applications. For example, centrifugal fan or pump applications running at 50% speed may consume as little as 13% power. In many cases, the return on investment may be as little as a few months.
Can I use a drive on single-phase power?
Yes, a three-phase output waveform can still be achieved with a single-phase input to the drive. The drive must be de-rated for single-phase input by using a drive that is double the horsepower of the motor being connected. Please contact us for more detailed information on these types of applications.
Can an adjustable speed drive be used on a smaller horsepower rated motor?
Yes, the drive electronic thermal overload can be programmed for as low as 10% of the drive’s rated current.

In addition, we conduct tests on the power module, to help ensure its optimum capabilities. These services include a 1-year Protection Plan on all components in the module, similar to that of the factory warranty coverage on a new module. This protection plan can also be extended to 2 years, for an additional cost.
I have a medium voltage ASD purchased in the secondary market and would like a factory warranty, even though the original factory warranty is expired.
Our TOSHcare Protection Plan is similar to that of our original factory warranty, and can be purchased for equipment that is beyond its warranty period. The protection plan also includes factory maintenance and can help provide you with the peace of mind that your equipment is well protected from defects.
I have several medium voltage ASDs at my sites but some of them are MVi models and some are MV2 models. I would like to be able to use one common set of spare parts for all them.
Toshiba offers field upgrades of T300 MVi ASDs to T300 MV2 at a fraction of the costs of a new drive. The upgraded T300 MVi will have the full features of the T300 MV2 controls and allow you to use a common set of spare parts for all your ASDs. In addition, you may also qualify to get a credit for any unused T300 MVi spare parts when you purchase T300 MV2 spare parts.
My ASD is running fine without performing any maintenance but I know I should do maintenance annually. What can I do to get the best price today?
Preventive Maintenance contracts are available at fixed costs for up to 3 years. This helps to budget maintenance costs and avoid price increases. Another option is to purchase a TOSHcare
® Protection Plan. This plan offers preventive maintenance and protection against material and workmanship defects, similar to the coverage of an original factory warranty.
I have a G3+ ASD that is running but some components are obsolete. How can I replace components without having to purchase a new drive?
You can purchase a field upgrade service that retrofits the G3+ into a HX7+ ASD. This service includes testing of the existing G3+ ASD, and the ASD-motor system at normal operating load. This service also includes a 6-month Protection Plan for qualifying drives.

This protection plan can also be extended to 2 years for an additional cost.
My ASD is in a harsh environment. Can Toshiba factory personnel maintain the ASD and offer recommendations for optimal operation?
Toshiba offers basic and advanced Preventive Maintenance (PM) contracts. The basic or advanced preventive maintenance program can help you optimize equipment operation for the appropriate environmental site conditions. As part of the advanced PM contract, we test the ASD components, analyze the fault history and make recommendations based on the results and observations. The basic or advanced PM is automatically included with the purchase of a TOSHcare Protection Plan.
I have an ASD used in a synchronous transfer application. It has a PLC that might be obsolete. What is the best program for me?
An upgrade of PLCs in an ASD is one of the services offered by our Custom Modification Program. TIC engineers will analyze the original project drawings and PLC program, and revise them as necessary to accommodate the new Toshiba PLC. Our field representatives will then upgrade the PLC in the field and test the ASD-motor-load system for proper operation.
