The ABWR is an evolutionary nuclear power plant design based on existing BWR designs. There are currently 35 BWR plants* in operation in the U.S. In 2008, Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Co., a U.S.- based Toshiba Subsidiary, was selected as a contractor of US-ABWR for the development of the South Texas Project Unit 3 & 4.
The ABWR was built on-time and on-budget in Japan. A total of four (4) ABWR units were engineered and constructed in Japan. The first two (2) units have been in flawless operation for more than ten (10) years.
Safe Operation Performance
When the large Chuetsu-Oki earthquake struck the location of the two (2) ABWRs in Japan in 2007, they both performed a safe, controlled shut down systematically and efficiently, according to the product design. Their impressive safety record is the result of advanced Toshiba engineering and robust capabilities, with specific qualifications geared to meet such "beyond design" events.
